Low Ferritin And Iron Levels In 'lap Band' Surgery Patients

Recommended Posts

I have good haemoglobin levels but my serum ferritin is always way low. I have just finished an online course on anaemia (I'm an RN) and one of the causes can be patients with 'gastric banding'. I wanted to know why this would be so from a general point of view. I don't eat red meat so I always thought that was it. I went to the chat room on Bandsters and a very helpful member suggested this site:Vegan Health Iron Rich Foods http://www.chezbettay.com/pages/health1/h_ironfoods1.html

anyone else have this problem?

I had blood work done awhile ago and everything was in the normal range. I think it depends on your diet and the Vitamins you take.

I have had times where my Ferritin level decreases but my Hgb remains within normal limits for some time. After a while if the Iron deficiency is not treated the Hgb begins to decrease also. Since having surgery my doctor is concerned that my Ferritin may be even more affected due to the band. I go for blood work this weekend. Here is a article that I found interesting about gastric banding and anemia.

Hope the link works.

I have had this, low but normal circulating haemoglobin but rock bottom ferritin. I assumed it was from a combo of chemotherapy and the small portions i eat as a bandster. My oncologist put me on Iron, it normalised within three months. But i stopped bcause of the effect it had on my altered bowels.

Ill be interested to see in a few months when i see my onc again whether its fallen gain. I bet it will, when i really look at my diet its not good enough.

I had low ferritin in my pre-op testing and now take an Iron chewable. I go in for my 3 month followup bloodwork soon so I'm interested in seeing if it has improved.

Fast forward seven months, sure enough, my ferritin has plummeted to 9. I have been feeling deathly awful, freezing cold and mentally foggy and quite depressed so iwent to the doc for testing.

Even being post menopausal and losing no blood monthly! I eat red meat several times a week. I certainly hope I have no unnoticed GI bleeding or that it's chemotherapy induced, I finished 18 months ago.

It really probably is just the result of three big surgeries and not enough ion in my diet.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
