I know I've been MIA lately and for that I apologize. My life has been hectic lately. I burned out on nursing and took a job in the auto industry. It's 55 hours a week, highly stressful but an exciting new adventure. (It's also double the income!) My daughter became engaged this spring and my son graduated from college. Honestly, for the past 3 months or so, I haven't known whether I was coming or going!!

I had my gall bladder removed in February. I didn't realize how much a bad gall bladder was helping in my weight loss/maintenance journey. Before the surgery, every time I ate I felt nauseous so I wasn't really eating much. I don't know if it was the surgery, the craziness going on in my life or a combination but I started gaining weight. 15 pounds in about 3 months! I had .5cc removed in December and then another .5 in Feb before my surgery. In March when I went to get refilled my doctor said he wanted to take it slowly and just add a little each month. I was fine with that. He added .3 in March and .2 in April. I went in Monday for another fill. I was 188 lbs. (I was 172 when I had gall bladder out). As I lay on the table and he had the needle in my port I asked him how much he was putting in. He said one. I thought .1cc isn't going to do any good so I just looked at him and held up two fingers. He said, "really, you want 2?" I said, "yea, put in 2!" I've had this thing almost 4 years and have a medical background. I know what I need and he knows that. Never in my wildest dreams did I think we were talking about full cc's. I wanted him to put in .2. He put in 2cc's! As I walked to my car, I thought I felt really tight but passed it off. I had eaten shortly before my appointment and thought there was probably some lunch still in my band. It'll pass through and I'll be fine! NOT!!! I've never had more than 6.2cc's in my band and was horribly tight then. I walked into his office with 5.4 and out with a whopping 7.4 I just didn't know it. I went back to work. By the time I got home I couldn't even swallow my saliva much less anything else. I woke up and slimed about every hour throughout the night. I called his office as soon as they opened the next morning and they said, "Get here as soon as you can." I went straight there. His office is in the hospital and he was in surgery. I told the nurse that I couldn't believe that this happened to my with a .2 fill. She wanted to send me straight to the lab for an upper GI. I told her it wouldn't do any good until I got some Fluid removed because there was no way I would be able to swallow the barium. She decided to do the unfill herself. She grabbed my chart and we headed to the exam room. I don't know why, but I said, "let me see that" and took my chart from her hands. When I opened it, that 7.4 jumped off that page at me! I said, "Oh my G_d, he put in 2cc's!!!! We were both shocked! I had her take out 1.6. Now I'm at 5.8 and enjoying good restriction! I was beginning to think that I had lost my "lapband brain" and was on the road to regaining the weight. It's only been a day and a half but I can already see that it's coming back. I taking this as a new beginning. I have no doubt that I'll be back to 170 very soon. Hopefully by my 4 year bandiversary that is coming up in about 3 weeks!

I guess the moral of this (long-winded) story is make sure you and your doctor are on the same page. Here's hoping that everybody's journey is going well!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
