Hi all, I was banded on 7th May and feeling so bloated and am afraid to have anything to drink even though I am thirsty. Is this normal? Also, is there a typical time that it takes for the pain on the left side to subside? Thanks.

Hi:

You have to drink so that you don't become dehydrated. It's been a long time since I was banded, but I recall that it takes just a few days for the pain to go away. I think I was just taking liquid tylenol by the second day post-op.

If the pain seems extreme you should call your surgeon to make sure there's nothing going on that shouldn't be - infection, etc.

Best wishes to you. Now, go get a drink. :)

Sue

I was also banded on May 7th. You have to walk every hour to get rid if the gas. For pain they gave me a form of liquid vidican which helps me a lot. I also have not been drinking but i know i need too!

I was also banded on the 7th, and I'm still bloated it's not too uncomfortable though and yes most of my pain is on the left side where the port is, this morning its better than the previous days, I haven't been that thirsty either but I am drinking, small sips throughout the day and at meal times I try to drink more, i have had no appetitie not hungry at all which makes it harder to even want to drink, i'm sure this will all subside in time!! keep me updated!!

Hi,

The bloating is very normal. You were only banded a few days ago. Everything is still swollen, so it will take a little while for the swelling to go down. You MUST drink. THAT IS SO IMPORTANT. Please. If you have any fears, do call your doctor. All this seems normal, but you must drink.

Take care and good luck,

Barbara

Thank you all for your advice, it is most appreciated. I woke up this morning feeling incredibally uncomfortable however following a bag rub from hubby am feeling a bit better. I suspect that yesterday I may have overdone it with the exercise - I did an hour or of gardening which was probably not the smartest activity I could have chosen.

Following the first few nights of sleeping sitting up I attempted to sleep in bed - I think this may have contributed to how uncomfortable I felt this morning.

I've read that at some point it my be necessary to take some soluble fibre to keep things regular - how do you know when is the right time to do this?

Thank you all for any advice

For the first few weeks all that pain is gas. Walk and don't sit too much. If it still continues after that time, then call your Dr. If you need to, Try some form of Fiber that you put into a liquid and use as prescribed. Good luck and be patient.

Thank you for your response - am feeling much better today - I think part of my problem may have been from trying to sleep laying down. My tummy is much better today however I'm just wondering about BMs - I haven't been to the loo for a week but I don't really feel that I need to. At what point should I be concerned? Thanks.

The only discomfort I had was the left shoulder pain... it last for 3 days.

I had these wonderful bean bags that I put in the microwave... they felt great !!! A heating pad would also help. I also found walking also helped with the shoulder pain.

Take it one day it a time... it does get better.

Hi Tom and thanks for your advice. I've had a much better day - it's the first day that my whole abdomen hasn't felt swollen. For the past 4 days I've only been able to have small sips of drinks and consequently wasn't having enough fluids. Today I was able to have my first Protein Drink without too much trouble - a yummy recipe I found on this site - so I'm hoping the worst is behind me now. Thanks again.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
