How Soon Can I Go To The Gym?

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. I'm on day 10 post op and feeling pretty good. I won't have a fill for another 4 weeks or so. When can you start exercising after the surgery? I've already been doing some walking but would like to go back to the gym and get on the bike. Just a little nervous about hurting anything inside. I don't see my doctor for another two weeks and I wasn't sure if I had to wait. Thanks for the input.

I was walking all the time. But, couldn't do any weight lifting or bending type exercise for 6 weeks. You can probably work on the bikes, but not overdo as most people want to. Take things slowly,as you are healing. Call your surgoen's ofc for best advise!!!Karen

I am on 12 day post op and only walking still. I have been walking since the day of surgery, well the first few days were more shuffling but now I am up to two 30 minutes walks a day. I see my doc on Friday and my first fill appt. is June 1st. I am going to check with my doctor to see what he has to say. I have a bowflex machine in the garage that I am itching to get working out on.

I want back and did treadmill starting day 4, and did that for 7 days, 3 days on the elliptical and then back to lap swimming at day 15 postop. I had been swimming before surgery so it was'nt a shock to my system.

Give your doc's office a call if it isn't in your post-op instructions. Every doctor has different post-op instructions.

I would think the receptionist could answer that question, the surgeon is probably pretty consistent throughout his practice.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
