new to the forum, and banded monday. just wondering how other newbies are doing, and how everyone is adjusting. i had no fill at the time of surgery & was in a lot of pain up until today. i'm so proud of myself for not taking any pain/ nausea medicine today. however i am feeling hungry, which my surgeon said i probably shouldn't feel. anyone else feel this way?

also, about 10 minutes after i drink something, i get a sharp pain in my chest, and it's hard to breathe. is this a stuck feeling? or just that i drank too much?

look forward to talking with you all!

I was just banded on 4/23 as well and I am also starting to feel hungry. I didn't have much pain at all, but I am still rather swollen and have lots of gas in my chest. Been walking to try and get it it move. Tomorrow I should be allowed to move from the clear liquid stage to full liquids. Are you still on clear?

Oh, and the sharp pain, if it's the same as what i am feeling, is due to swelling causing wicked restriction at this point. I was told it should subside. My band is also empty.

no, not clear. just all sugar free popsicles, broth, & Protein Shakes. have any other suggestions? my surgeon suggested anything that i can sip through a straw (without using a straw) i can eat. but wouldn't that be considered purreed food? - which is weeks 2-4.

Not really sure! I am only allowed broth, Water, sugar free Popsicles( although i swear the ones they were giving me at the hospital were not sugar free) and sugar free Jello. Adding Protein Shakes tomorrow. The tightness in chest is making me wish I didn't do this. I am hoping it goes away!

My dr. Said just liquid...no purée. My favorite broths are from homemade Soups and bean broth, I just make sure I strain everything out. I freeze it so after fills when I have to be on liquid for a day or two I have it on hand. I hope this helps.

Puréed foods can still be pretty thick. U have to be able to sip thru a straw right now by watering down with milk, Water, broth etc.

the tightness in my chest finally started to disappear today. i only get it now and then, but mostly about 10 minutes after drinking. i hope it goes away for you soon! keep walking & maybe that will help. i try to walk every hour for at least 5 minutes.

The tightness in your chest can also be gas...move, move, move it should get better. If not call your Dr. Good luck...

i was banded on 4/23 also. I only experience the tightness when i gulp instead of sip. I havent experienced any hunger yet. I have been nibbling on Jello all day and i have 2 ounces of broth periodically. I stopped taking the pain meds days ago, it appears im allergic to them. i got hives all on my abdomen. Im only taking liquid tylenol now. I was only nauseated on day one. maybe this is TMI but i havent had a bowel movement since ive been home. that worries me

its great that you were able to get off the pain meds. im allergic to some of them as well... particularly morphine. you shouldnt need to take them for long. i think i was only on them for 36 hours if i remember. talking about bowels... im nearly 7 weeks out and im still having some issues. Lets hope this all sorts itself soon. good luck with it all.

i also stopped taking my pain medications today. no allergic reaction, but the pain has definitely subsided. no nausea either. just lots of gas. i am still trying to learn how to "sip". not that i gulped my drinks all the time, but i just feel so thirsty sometimes. all these Protein Drinks are definitely not helping with my thirst either.

as for the bowel movements, i mean think about it, we haven't ate anything in days, or weeks. (depending on your doctors orders for pre-op.) so i wouldn't be super concerned yet, but i'm sure milk of magnesia will definitely do the trick.

would you believe ive tried to get it here in australia and cant get it in my state?? grr... at the moment im ''bidding for a bottle of it'' on eBay... have you ever heard of anything so rediculous in all your life? ive complained in the chemist shops here that the good old remedies are being taken off the shelves and the more expensive drugs that make more money for the drug cartels are replacing it. We always had milk of magnesia in our house when i was growing up.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
