9 Days Post Op And Suddenly Covered In Hives- Soy?

Recommended Posts

Hi folks-

I was banded last Tuesday. This morning I woke up covered in hives. They have gradually getting worse all day, despite taking Benadryl and zyrtec.

My current theory is that this is a reaction to soy- I have tested allergic to it, but never had trouble with it before. However, now that my diet is so much smaller, I am wondering if it's having a bigger impact

Unfortunately, all of my Protein drinks/powders have soy in them. I know that there are soy free Protein powders and drinks our there- anyone want to recommend any of them?

Anyone else have this happen? I am frustrated-I did all my pre-surgery work to find drinks and powders that I enjoyed, and now I am back to square one. I am going to ask the dr's office if they can advance my diet a little so I can eat eggs and mushed up beans/hummus, so maybe I can avoid th drinks altogether for a bit....

Thanks for your thoughts/recommendations. :)

I've been drinking pure Protein Shakes and there's no soy. I prefer the chocolate to vanilla but will drink the vanilla. But your right sounds like your allergies! Sorry - hang in there!

I had a reaction to eggs a few months after my surgery. I was eating them a lot and noticed a rash on my upper thigh. Stopped eating eggs & it went away. I had also been told I was allergic to them years ago but it was never a problem. I have not talked to a dr but think you may be right that since we're eating less it affects us more. Also, I've heard that sometimes when you over do anything it can become a problem. I try to have a variety of foods now. Good luck!

Thanks :)

I talked to my drs office today, and they agree that it is likely soy. They advanced my diet a tiny bit, and are going to let me eat scrambled eggs, hummus and mushed up beans- i do not want to drink any of the Protein Drinks for a bit until I let all of the hives go away, and then I can add one type of Protein Powder in at a time and see what happens.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
