When Will I Be Able To Eat Real Food Again?

Recommended Posts

I had my band on the 12th. My post-op is on the 17th. I'm just wondering, when will I be able to eat real food again? I was on the two week pre-op liquid diet, then on the 48 hour post-op clear liquid, now I'm on the post-op milk based liquid diet. I'm just wondering what to expect after my post-op appointment on the 17th, am I going to be given another diet? Or will I be able to eat real food again? I have to say I wasn't expecting all this when I got my band! I just want to get started, lol.

usually you return to normal foods at 4-6 weeks depending on your Dr.

Hang in there. Please please please call your Dr and ask them to talk to you about the guidelines. I am about 16 months post op and have lost over 90 lbs. I ate real food prior to when my Dr told me and I really wish I hadn't. I was really lucky not have anything bad happen but I was one of the lucky ones, you might not be. It's not worth it. I found that boiled cabbage blended filled me up and drinking Water like I was dying. Your Dr should have told you what to do. The main reason why you should not eat real food too soon is because your stomach is healing from not only having the lap band on it but the stitches to secure it. When you eat solid food your stomach curns and smashed it up. Don't make its job harder, it really should just be healing or you could damage it or have a slip easier.

Oh and fyi I had pizza last Friday but only a piece rather than the whole thing and I was full. You will have plenty of time to eat the foods you love ( just a lot less) but that time is not now.

I started mushies about a week out. By 2 weeks out I was pretty much back to normal foods just smaller portions.

Journey2healthy- just out of curiousity, what DID you expect from this surgery food wise ?? your dr should of talked to you about what to eat and what you might have trouble with , also maybe some paperwork with food info on it. everybodys different when it comes to what they can tolerate. i can eat anything just in small amounts, but 3 weeks ago i had 3 sips of an alcoholic drink and had a bad reaction. Everybodys different, so check with your dr and a nutrionist to see what you should be doing. Good luck !

I'm just wondering what the next step is...like right now I can eat basically broth, Jello, Tomato Soup, and Apple sauce. The nutritionist did explain my diet once I get to the normal stuff, when I get my first fill. I was just wondering if anybody could tell me what to expect from my post op visit, but I suppose I'll wait.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
