Can I Still Have Surgery If I Have Shingles

Recommended Posts

Ok - I just got my surgery date - May 16th.- just over a month. And I broke out in a rash - doc says I have shingles - gave me antibiotics and pain meds. Does anyone know if I will still be able to have my WLS.

Shingles is a virus- I think they'd postpone if the shingles aren't resolved by the surgery date.

From what I've heard, shingles can be very painful. I don't think I'd want to be dealing with two different pains at one time, even if they give you the okay for surgery.

I had shingles. ugh. Even after you get better you can have pain. I used to take Valium and could not wear my bra. I would rock back and forth at my desk. It drove me nut.

I don't know if this will work or not but take a spray bottle, put a little bit of purified Water and white cider vinegar in it. Spray the rash. I'd say about 80% vinegar and 20% purified water. It will smell but who cares if it works.

Possibly, if you still have a rash you would need to be in isolation so they may not do it with an elective surgery. It would be a good idea to get in contact with your surgeon to find out. Good luck!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
