Need To Shrink My Liver **help**

Recommended Posts

I am having my surgery 4/12 I just seen my surgeon today and was told that I needed to shrink my liver. He said that I could do step 3 which is basically Protein for Breakfast, lunch, snack, and dinner along with 1 cup of veggies for dinner only.

I would like to know what else could I do to help the process of shrinking my liver?

Running...

walking on treadmill for 1 hr...

Kick boxing...

ETC...

I am worried that my liver will no shrink.

That I know of the 2week thing. I was told because I had lost some weight that I didn't have to do the 2 week liquid diet and just to do it a week before my surgery so I didn't loose too much weight.

Now going back today I have gained some weight back and he said I need to loose 3-5LBS that isn't a real problem its will my liver shrink...

Losing weight is what makes the liver shrink also no carbs. Something about ketosis I believe

My doc had me on the South Beach Super Charged Diet Phase 1 for 2 weeks before surgery. I dropped almost 10 lbs.

The best way to shrink your liver is by removing most carbs from your diet. The body uses carbs to make glucose for fuel. If you deprive it of carbs, it must use its back up plan of turning fat into glucose. This process is called ketosis. During ketosis the body will turn to burning the fat around the organs first (your liver)...thus shirking it. Depending on how strict you are with the diet you can lose a significant amount of weight quickly because the body will be using a lot of calories to turn fat into glucose.

My doctor had me do a diet similar to Atkins for 10 days prior. Low carb, high Protein. Cut out sugars. Worked great for me! After surgery, my dr said liver was small and could tell had followed the diet. Good luck!!

Doc told me the first to gain and first to lose weight is the liver. SO no worries your liver will shrink just don't cheat yourself by eating carbs.

By eating high protient low carb you will put your body into ketosis. The body produces ketones that kind of supercharge weight loss.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
