How Do You Know When You Need A Fill?

Recommended Posts

I was banded on Jan 9th, 2012 and i have not had a fill yet. I have lost 43 pounds so far. I am not hungry alot...i generally keep my calories either under or around 1100. However, i really havent seen much weight loss in the past two weeks. I am wondering if i should get a fill? I'm not sure any info would be great :D

My nutritionist said you need a fill if the following applies to you:

  • You are hungry between meals *less than 3-4 hours between meals
  • You are eating more than a cup of food at each meal
  • You are relying on "slider" foods to eat instead of other healthier choices

I need a fill... I am able to eat more than one cup at each meal (sometimes).

This is good advice! You've done really great so far, so don't stress too much. I would say if you can eat more than you're supposed to, you may need a fill. From the amount you've been able to lose without one, I would be cautious and start with a small fill. You could be one of the lucky people who don't really need many to get to the green zone. Good luck!

Thanks guys!...I dont feel like i am eating more than a cup at each meal...I mean sometimes i do but generally i dont...sometimes i can go 5-6 hours without eating and then other times i need a snack(like almonds) in between. It just generally depends...yes my surgeon said she is shocked I've lsot this much weight without a fill thus far. I might ask for just a 1cc fill or something along those lines and see how that feels. all ive done to shed the weight fast is eat low calorie, sugan, carb items and keep the protien amount high. I excercise 4-5 times a week for an hour-1.5.

kdalesandro773, it sounds like you may be like me. I also have had restriction since surgery, even when my band was still empty. It's not common but some of us are like that.

I only have 3.5 cc in my 10cc band and have lots of restriction and am very much in the Green Zone. My doctor was actually concerned that was so restricted with so little in my band, but when I told him I wasn't vomiting and could eat anything (just in small quantities) he said I'm likely just one "one of the lucky ones"

If you do get a fill, I would suggest a small one. Also, be sure to take a big drink of Water (not just a little sip) immediately after before leaving his office, just in case it's too much. Both of my first two fills he had to immediately take 1cc back out because I was gurgling up Water and couldn't swallow it, and both were after relatively small fills to begin with.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
