Old-Timers (3+ Years Banded) Recommitting To The Bandster Lifestyle

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone I was banded in december 2009. I was doing so well I had lost 90 lbs and then after to unfills I have gained about 30 back. Now I don't feel restriction and there might be a problem with the band. Waiting to hear from doctor. I am very disappointed in myself I swore I would never go backwards and look what happened. So I am looking for support too. I never realized till after the band that I am truly addicted to food. Scary!!

Hey all and welcome to the newcomers (but old-timers!). Heidib my friend, good to see you here!

Well I went for my post-op appt today, brought forward a week due to the fact that my belly seems to be quite swollen, and found out some interesting things today.

Turns out he didn't cut into me over the port site but instead went through my old body lift vertical scar - which is what I was hoping for - but that meant he had to do a fair amount of 'burrowing' to get to the old port. He also replaced the tubing, which he wasn't sure he would have to do. So overall there was significant trauma to the area to get it all fixed. Add that to the fact that I am quite thin now, and he expected the swelling to be significant, and it is.

The second thing I learnt was that the leak in my tubing seems to have been caused by a tattoo needle. The leaking area has green ink staining it, and he was completely confused by it at first, then realised that it was the same colour as my tattoo. He believes that the tubing was close to the skin and the tattoo needle nicked it, and what started as a small, nearly indiscernible leak just kept getting bigger. He has taken pictures of the tubing (he showed me) because he said he was thinking of writing a report or paper on it, because he's never seen anything like it. But then again, how many people get tattooed on their stomach over their port area?

So moral of the lesson: don't get tattooed anywhere near your port. It turned out it's likely I caused the leak myself. I'm a little peeved about it now. BUT the good news is he checked the liquid he put in at the op (4cc) and all of it was still there so it looks like the leak is fixed now. I've now got 5cc in there and am hopefully back on my way to health and to some restriction!

Well I know that tattoo's can be dangerous but this is the first time I have heard of lapband leakage as a risk! LOL.

I have never been a big fan of tatts and now I have another reason not to get one!

Glad that he was able to find the apparent cause of your leak and that it now seems to have been fixed.

This is def good for me to know! I have a Tummy Tuck scar that is one ugly b***h so I want to cover it but my surgery a few weeks ago ( to answer ur question Lellow) was a scar revision feb 4 and then a port revision feb 18( my doc moved my port to an easier to hit location for Canadian doctors)

Now my port is right at my left hip. I wanted a tat to cover it so it wasnt so obvious, scrap that idea. Guess I am telling the world I got the band cuz there is no explanation for that bump (yes its low profile and still sticks out)

Anyways so I am walking behind the band wagon but not yet on it. My scar revision surgery from Feb4 th seems to be a waste because the incision has a hole that won't heal in it. Not only that but it has now ripped horizontal and vertically making it bigger. I will never get a scar revision again ( 99% of the scar revision was perfect this little bugger of a spot is the only problem so ok scar revision was ok for the most part).

Hopefully by April I can hop on the wagon. For now I am just trying to eat better but no gyming *tear* what a waste of 4 month membership when I only went 3 times before surgery and i leave the country in a month grrrr

Hope everything is healing good Lellow

AB, no tattoo over port. NOOOOOO. :)

Today I'm feeling 80% better. The Alien Baby Belly is started to disappear, hallelujah! There is still some swelling but nothing last the last 5 days. I was starting to get scared that I was gonna have to live with it forever!

I have another appt with Peter Nottle next Friday and I will probably ask for another fill. The 5cc is doing nothing.

Hope everyone's going great!

I didn't think it did either. But I think coz of my skin colour, he was really working that needle to make sure the ink 'took'. Plus it appears the surgeon who did my body lift put my port and tubing very close to the skin because, I guess, i didn't really have much fat by then. So it was waiting to happen, I guess.

hey Xavier,

good you decided to join us here! I love that some of you, who I've become familiar with through the rest of the forum, are finding a home here.

How is everyone going? Today, with my tummy down to almost normal, I actually experienced some restriction for the first time since my op. I hardly ate anything today - I was busy, I got out of the house for the first time since my op (that wasn't just going to see my dr) and I forgot to eat pretty much all day. And I wasn't actually hungry. Then I got to dinner, ate about 2 cups of risotto and felt full. Makes me wonder how much of my eating the last few days has been from boredom.

But I was healing so I'm disregarding my diet from the last few days. With my partner out of the country for work, my friends have been dropping me food off while I was recovering, or I'd make something quick, and mostly it wasn't a huge consideration for it to be low fat/cal/whatever. I also kinda grazed all day because there was so much food!

But after today, I'm going to start paying attention to my hunger signals again to make sure I'm not eating just because.

Having you guys around has been really motivating, so I'm so glad you're all here, btw.

Hi everyone! It seems this "new" restriction level is staying with me. I am listening to satisfied signals better and stopping eating. Even though it is about half what I was eating before. I have room to lose a few more pounds.

I am not getting stuck now, and that was my biggest concern. Solids Proteins are going down, and staying down. It is just so strange that it would happen 6 months after my last fill. I've heard of fills kicking in a few weeks later, but months? Strange!

Anyway, just wanted to pop in and say hi! I owe, I owe, so off to work I go!!

lellow- I'm glad everything is going better for you and your healing now. :-)

I am happy..since having my recent fill the scale is finally going down!!! :D yea baby!!!!!

I am sometimes still hungry in between though. I am tryijng to figure it out. I dont think ground turkey stays with me very long. maybe because its ..the real low fat kind???? not sure.. well I;m hanging in there. if i can stay away from the scale i think i:ll be good. if i weigh and dont see it going down i get upset and mad. then sometimes i will binge :-(. keeping scale out of house

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
