Mexico banders...tax deductible ?

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone who band surgery in MX (TJ) has been able to write off surgery expenses on their Federal tax return. I don't see any harm in at least trying to do so.....what can I lose? :D

YES.

both my wife and i used it as a write off. plus anything related to it such as the airfare, motel and car rental.

we also write off all our fill payments.

YES, I did mine twice and dental and prescriptions plus fills, But, I think it has to be over so much $ for you to claim it. keep your receipts!

Don't worry about your weight going down it does, it took me 3years to get from 250 to 135 now i'm back up to the 170lbs but i don't have any restriction right now and then when I got to my goal weight I still looked fat in the mirror. Funny, how when your big you see yourself as small and when your small you see yourself as big!

I wrote off my Mexican surgery, though it didn't amount to much. I was really surprised - apparently you need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on medical stuff before it makes a dent in your return. Or I need a dishonest tax guy!

Yes it was a lot like in the 20,000 b4 i could even claim it. So, if you don't have much you probably can't use it , but try anyways

you can write off the medical bills, the expense going along with the travel, the special diet before and after, the fills and follow up. If it has to do with your weight loss, you can deduct it. Even the workout eq you buy.

I was told anything that exceeds 7.5% of total income can be deducted. If you were self pay I assume the the amount you can deduct depends on your income and what the surgery expenses were. I havent filed as of yet.

Yup...that part that exceeds 7.5% of your adjusted gross income (AGI).

So, compare two patients who paid $10,000 for their bands:

1--AGI of $30,000. 10,000 - 2250 = $7750 deductible

2--AGI of $80,000. 10,000 - 6000 = $4000 deductible

How much you can deduct depends on your income. But there are no requirements as to where you have your medical care.

Mine will be 100% deducted. Since I am self employed my LLC pays 100% of all expenses. Not only for myself but my entire familly no matter what the medical problem is. If any of you are self employed and are fixing to have the surgery go to your accountant and look into an LLC. Well worth it.

Carolyn,

You betcha!

I wrote off my original banding and airfare (my hotel was included in my banding price). Then the next year I wrote off my band removal and this year I will write off my rebanding and hotel and taxis and whatever else I can get a receipt for!

Who is your doctor?

Don't forget dental, prescriptions and I think I even got some mileage from the dentist to home and back. You can call your pharamcy and ask for a copy of all your prescription for you and your family and they will print you a copy with a total. FYI

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
