5 Day Post Op & Not Much Weight Loss

Recommended Posts

I was banded on Friday 2/10/12 I've been doing the liquid diet for the last 3 day because the first 2 days I wasn't able to eat at all! Well I stepped on the scale today and I'm only down a pound...I'm not sure if this is because my stomach is still tight and bloated or if I'm not doing something correctly. I don't go for my first post op appointment until this coming Fridat 2/17/12. Shouldnt I have lost more weight within these 5 day???

Dont focus on the scale too much right now. You may lose while on the liquid diet, but as soon as you go on mushies/soft foods, you will plateau. In fact, I gained 5lbs before my first fill. I was worried about it and talked to my dr, he said its normal and not to stress over it. I just had my first fill on Monday and so far have lost 2lbs since my fill. Dont let yourself get discouraged, its normal. Remember, you are still swollen inside, you are retaining alot of Water and typically the liquid diet is high in sodium. then when you get on mushies, you will have alot of carbs (because lets face it, mushy foods are not very high in protein/low in carbs). You may lose a little, you may gain a little before your fill. Right now there is nothing in your band, so by week 4, your appetite will be back with a screaming vengance...thats when it gets hard (as I sit heere with my stomach growling ever so loudly haha)

!!!!!!!

You are only 5 days out , relax. You didn't put the weight on overnight and you aren't going to lose it overnight either. Plus it is normal for a persons weight to fluctuate from day to day because of Fluid, hormones etc. That is why many Dr's only advise you to weigh yourself once a week.

It would be nice to think that we could have the surgery and wake up slim but unfortunately that doesn't happen. The surgery is just the beginning and the actual weight loss takes time afterwards. Some lose quicker than others but the speed doesn't matter as it is not a race.

The recommended weight loss with a band is 1 - 2lbs per week.

I find it so funny how every single day there is a post like this...haven't you read any of the posts on here about not loosing until your first fill? Yes, I just had surgery a week ago and have lost 12 pounds already..but I think it has something to do with Water weight. Because before I went into surgery my ankles were HUGE and after having them up for a week, they are back to normal size again...so I really think that most of my weight loss is due to that, and I may even gain some back! I was loosing every day...but I'm on mushies now and it stopped. I know that I may gain now, and I am prepared for that...you should be too! It is a very normal thing as you will read time and time again.

You are only 5 days out!! You are still in the very early stages of healing. I didn't start losing weight until a good 6-8 weeks out. At 5 days you probably still have a lot of bloating/swelling from the surgery...at least I did. It takes time and you need to be patient.

I only went down 2.5 in the first week, and I had plication on top of being banded! Don't even think about the weight loss for a few weeks, and BAM! It WILL start to happen! liquids doesn't necessarily mean weight loss... right now you're doing it to heal! take care!

So glad that I read this post. I am 2.5 weeks post op. I lost 14 pounds in the first week while on liquids and have not lost anything the last week and a half on mush. I've been tracking and I am eating between 1,000-1,200 calories a day and started back at the gym on Saturday and the scale still hasn't moved!

I haven't gained, so I am thankful for that, but I'd like to see a loss. I feel great and already see a difference in my clothes which is great. But they don't call this period of time bandster hell for nothing! I can't wait for my first fill, 3/13!

I understand your frustration. Tomorrow it will be 2 weeks since I have been banded and I have lost a little over 3 lbs. I am around 600-700 cal a day. I don't mind it too much because I am not that hungry. I think it would be more frustrating if I was starving (like really sacrificing) and not losing. I would normally feel great about a 3lb weight loss but I keep reading these posts where people are losing huge amounts (10 - 15 lbs) the first couple of weeks and it makes me think I am doing something wrong or not doing enough. I know I can't change how or when my body will let go of this weight, I can only keep on doing what I am doing (<1000 cal a day and 60 min of cardio 5-6 days a week) and know that it will eventually come off. Even if it is 1 %#@* lb at a time, it will come off.rolleyes.gif

I have to wonder if some people did any research before they elected to have this surgery.

cls, everyone loses at a different rate. I am almost 2 months post op, had a delay in getting my first fill due to my port flipping, and I honestly didnt lose anything after surgery. In fact, when I went in to get my port repaired, I had gained 5lbs. Its not the end of the world. I have lost 3 lbs since I had my fill /port repaired on Monday. Until you have your first fill, you may not see any changes. This is not a sprint to lose weight...more like a marathon.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
