To Exercise Or Not To Exercise?

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I am on my 3rd day of full liquid diet, taking in approximately 600 calories a day. I don't really have the energy to exercise, but was wondering if any surgeons encouraged or discouraged exercise during this phase?

I was told to get up and do as much walking as I could tolerate. Aside from that, I had to wait till the Dr cleared me, which was 1 week later,in my case.

You talking pre op? I had a week pre op liquid diet and I did not work out that whole week. At the calorie intake I was taking in I didn't think I would be able to make it through. I restarted at the gym like 2 weeks post op, when I was on mushies. Still my caloric intake was pretty low, but I was ok.

My nutritionist told me to get started now on working out. He said gradually build up the workout routine. If walking is all I can tolerate do that but add to it each day. He said this will help with post op recovery and post op work outs. It won't he such a shock to my body.

If its hard to workout for you start off by stretching maybe a few yoga moves then add resistance.

Good luck.

Preop I had already been doing an hour of strenuous cardio a day for over a year. My doctor put me on a 500 calorie a day liquid diet; that he planned on me doing for several MONTHS. When I asked how that would affect my work outs he gave me this look "Why would it?" Anyway I did that stupid diet for 5 days and then stopped because I believe I was allergic to the drinks (tingleing in back of throat). I went back to my 2 Protein Drinks with one low cal Protein based meal. So yes he did expect me to continue my workouts on 500 cals a day.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
