What Makes The Lap Band Better Than Traditional Weight Loss Methods?

Recommended Posts

I think you sound like a great candidate. I was like you--a big exerciser with a big appetite--and I think we're one of the types most likely to find success with the band. The exercise is key and the band manages Portion Control. If you were a sedentary snacker who grazed on Cookies and chips throughout the day I'd say you might want to consider other options, but as it stands I think the band and your natural tendencies are a good match. Eventually you'll get to have those chocolates back too!

You have just described me perfectly. I have always hated exercise and my problem was the constant snacking rather than big meals. chocolate , Cookies, pickled onions etc. The most exercise I got was probably walking back and fore to the fridge.

So theoretically the band should not have worked for me but it did. Just over 2.5 years later I am still at goal and maintaining. Admittedly I have gained 1kg since the beg of Dec which I now need to focus on losing but other than that small blip it has been an easy ride.

Which just goes to show that it is probably impossible to predict in advance which WLS is your best match.

For me, it helps with the hunger and portions. I was like you in that I never felt full or satisfied. The band changed all that and has made losing easier. I don't have many cravings and feel satisfied after small portions. I have been banded for 6 years and have lost 1/2 of my weight, but am working hard again and am rededicated to watching my diet and exercising. I have never gained any back, but I did stop losing. Losing is hard for me now b/c my thyroid went south, but it is happening and is much easier for me now than pre-band. It's nice not to think about food all of the time.

ElizabethAnne,

If you are considering the lap-band or comparing it with other surgeries like gastric bypass, I would certainly do some research. You will find that lap-band is much less risky and it is completely reversible if it turns out that it isn't the right tool for you. Recent long-term studies have shown that the success rate of the two surgeries is equal, so I can't imagine why anyone would want to take the added risk of gastric bypass without at least trying the lap-band first.

My surgeon seems really interested in the long-run impact the band will have on my life. He isn't just the surgeon, he will be there to help me make the right decisions about adjustments and his staff are amazingly friendly and helpful. He has two nutritionists at his office. I can't imagine a more secure environment for helping me on my journey.

I just started (was banded yesterday), but I have no regrets or fears that I will have regrets. But that is because I did the research to find the right procedure for me with the right surgeon.

Good luck in your weight loss effort, no matter what road you choose!

Thank you for the good advice. I did a lot of reading at first and am now asking many questions. As a result, I am getting closer to the place where you are at---having no fears that I will have regrets. Congratulations on your weight loss!

Well, If you have ever Dieted, lost weight, then gained it back over and over. "I see you have"

This band can help prevent this.

You might fall of the wagon, say,,, if you were to have a unfill for a reason.

As soon as you see the scale going up ! You can stop, and get yourself back to the basics without any trouble. "I'll bet you can't do that now, or keep it going in your future..."

Then, once filled again, you stay back on track.

It really is a great tool.

Also, I am addicted to food. certain foods "TRIGGER FOODS" could set me off !

Now ! I don't miss them, and I don't eat them. If I have a chip or two, I can deal with it because of the resistance from the band.

The resistance takes away that drive to just sit back and eat, or go out to a Restaurant, and go in to the kitchen, and start cooking.

My food bill has dropped allot !

So yep I know what your talking about, and I have lost weight, and it's still coming of.

Also remember that yo yo dieting is very dangerous, and will really mess up your Matabilissim.

That means more weight gain.....

54Shirley,

I appreciate your thoughts and experiences. Thank you! Congratulations on your weight loss!

I highlighted in red the exact reason why dieting didn't work for me either. I also took Phen-fen and was able to get most of the weight off, but as soon as it went off the market my appetite returned and so did all of the weight plus some. I am an "excellent" dieter too..lol...I can get it off, but I can never keep it off. The wonderful thing about the band for me is that it has taken my appetite away, the same way the phen-fen did. I find that small meals truly satisfy me and I no longer have the desire to overeat. I can actually watch the food network and not get hungry! For me, this band has been the answer to my prayers. I always told family and friends that if I could find something that would stop my ravenous hunger I knew I could get back to a healthy weight. I still have a way to go on this journey but I know I will make it this time.

hopefloats,

Thank you so much for your insight. If the band can suppress my appetite like Phen-Fen did, I will finally be able to successfully manage my weight. Though they were short-lived, I loved those Phen-Fen days! You've given me great hope!

All I can say is that I have not "dieted" since getting my band almost 4 years ago. I have easily been maintaining this weight for over two years.

The band has given me control over my portions by giving me the sense of satiety that I never had. My thoughts no longer revolve around food at all times. Before being banded I was always thinking about my next meal or snack. I always felt physically hungry. That is no longer the case.

Cocoabean,

Your great success gives me hope, too! I cannot even imagine a month without dieting, so four years is definitely amazing. Thank you for sharing your experiences. And congratulations on losing the excess weight and on maintaining that loss!

LapNYC,

Thank you for your encouraging thoughts. I met with the dietician yesterday, and interestingly, your words based on your own experiences, echoed hers. She asked if I ever "drank" my calories, and I said no way. Consuming calorie-ladened drinks has never been an issue for me. She, too, thought the lap band would work well for my personality and would suppress my hunger. Chocolates? I'll be too fearful of getting off-track again. :)

elcee,

You have given me food for thought. And that's precisely why this WLS information is so difficult for me to muddle through.

When I first met with my surgeon over two years ago, he recommended the lap band for me, and quickly added that if it didn't work, we could then move to a different WLS. Since then, my insurance coverage has changed somewhat. If I am approved for weight loss surgery, a second type will not be approved later unless there's a medical complication.

I want to be able to take a test that will determine which option is clearly the best one for me! If only it were that easy. :)

Kimberly,

Congratulations on losing half of your weight---that's fantastic! The thought of never gaining any back is completely foreign to me but exciting.

I, too, have a low-functioning thyroid and have taken medication since I was very young. When I am on the proper dosage, I don't notice any problems, but when the dosage becomes too low, the first thing I notice is either weight gain or lack of weight loss when I am trying hard. And unfortunately, when my medicine is increased, the pounds don't just drop off. However, they do eventually come off, which is the most important part.

Thank you for sharing your experiences. Good luck with losing the remainder of your excess weight!

ElizabethAnne,

I think you are going to make the decision that is BEST for you! And that's what we all want for you. :-)

Good luck and let me know if you have any questions. I am not an expert, but was just banded so a lot of this is new and fresh. I am certainly willing to share my experience with you.

Linda

doctordiva,

Thank you for your encouragement and support. I also appreciate your offer to share your experience with me as a recently banded individual. No questions come to mind right now, but I will likely have additional questions if I become insurance-approved.

I hope your recovery is going well!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
