Why Is The Band Often Tighter In The Morning?

Recommended Posts

I just read a couple of posts about the band being tighter in the morning and am trying to understand why. Could someone please explain it? Thank you!

It's because of how the body rests and fluids redistribute throughout the body as you sleep.

In the morning my band is a bit tighter as are my wedding rings...but by the end of the day, as Water (it's heavy you know) moves down to your lower extremities, my rings and band are looser...my shoes might be tigher..I think that's where the Water goes lol

I just asked my dr about this same thing this week. I thought her answer was actually pretty interesting. (just like karewpah said) fluids redistribute when you sleep. But not just in your body. The Fluid in your band is constantly traveling around your pouch and down into the catheter down to your port. The Fluid doesn't just sit in your band. so when you sleep gravity naturally make the fluid rest in the band. The tight feeling is there, but as you get up and move and the saline starts moving the tightness subsides.

I thought that was pretty interesting becuase I never thought about the fluid moving around.

I had always wondered why it was more difficult for me to eat in the morning too. My doctor said this was normal. He said to drink something hot in the morning and then eat something a little later.

Thanks, mdlapband and Karewpah, for taking the time to explain. Your explanations make sense. Just wish there was some way to figure out if the band will work for me. I don't really want to have surgery, but if it means I will finally be able to maintain a weight loss for the rest of my life, I will be comfortable doing it.

That's good to know. Did he say why it should be a hot beverage? I have never been as hungry in the morning as I am the rest of the day.

He said to drink a warm beverage because it would help loosen the restriction on the band when I attempted to eat a little later in the morning.

Thank you for your reply. I understand what you have written, but it's difficult to understand the concept of restriction without having ever experienced it.

If you drink a COLD Beverage, it will only cause it to tighten up tighter.

So keep it Warm.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
