I used to make my own Protein Shake with strawberries, spinach, vanilla Protein Powder and a banana tasted pretty darn good, would use my vita-mix to puree it. Maybe you could try hiding the Protein powder in something like that which tastes better.

I am sucking at this Protein Shake only diet. My Pre-op diet instructions says if I need to cheat, I should only eat a small chicken breast or meat no sides, but to do it seldom. Well I'm on day 5 and I've only made it thru 1 day without a small cheat.

I think the sweet taste of the shakes are getting to me. My kids get worried because they see me gag and make 'vomiting' sounds after I've had one. Nothing's coming up but definitely doesn't feel good (its not the taste of the shake that part I like). I'm scared this will be my reaction post surgery (protein shake diet first 5 days). Which I hear any vomiting post op is a no-no.

Anyone out there have similar experience or have any encouraging words of advice?

You can use 12 ozs of Water with 2 scoops for 24 grams Protein but my doctor said I could use 1% milk which gives you 36 grams of protein. I personally love the Peanut Butter mixed with the banana flavor. I do one scoop of each to get the combination taste. Check it out, I think you will LOVE these....

@queenbea I had exactly the same experience with the sweetness of the Protein Shakes. I didn't use them pre-op, but being on them post-op for a week nearly drove me bonkers. I had to beg to move on to mushies. It turns out that it isn't unusual to become a bit hypersensitive to sweetness after bariatric surgery of any kind, so I can't promise you have it any easier after surgery.

Unfortunately, the bottom line is that you need to follow doctor's orders, but there may be a couple of things you can try or at least ask about. You might be able to do broths after you've gotten your Protein down, which at least might relieve your taste buds a bit. Also, there are people who make unflavored protein powders. I used one made by Now Sports. The benefit of it is that you aren't wedded to one or two favors like vanilla or chocolate but can mix it with whatever you want. Maybe if you used that mixed with skim milk it would be less sweet and more palatable to you? It's worth a shot.

Good luck!

Thanks and good luck to you. I am near Charlotte, NC. It is going really slow, I am ready to get it over with. I am scheduled for 7am in the morning on the 16th and have to be there at 5:30am so I am hoping I am the first one. I have to stay overnight so I am kind of glad for that so I can have a little help the first 24 hrs. Again let's stay in touch and good luck to you.

Good luck to you. 7 am is the first surgery slot in most hospitals, so you've got a good shot of going in on time. And even so, delays don't always happen. I went in within 30 minute of my noon scheduled time.

I'll be sending positive thoughts!

Thank You so much... I do hope you are right about being in the first slot. My Mom is going with me since my husband is on the road so I hope she can get up that early. LOL... Keep me in your prayers.

Hi Heather,

I am 3 days post op (surgery was Feb. 8th) and am doing a bit better today. This was much more of an ordeal than I expected (OMG yes!). I am on full liquids for 2 weeks then 2 weeks of mushies. Have had very little appetite so far. The pain from the incisions and the gas really knocks your socks off! I am keeping a chart of all the meds and the times I take them. It is too easy to OD on the vicodin/acetominaphen elixir. I am down to one morning nap and one p.m. nap as of today. I have had a couple of 2 hour periods of time PAIN FREE where I have been feeling almost normal, but then the pain comes on fast! So it is all about listening to your body and doing what it needs!

I am taking off work until next Thursday- and if I feel that's too soon, will also take off Thurs. and Friday. I just will see how it goes. Today I had a half cup of 98% fat free cream of chicken Soup and it was delicious. For dinner I might have the same or perhaps some Greek yogurt. It's a waiting game!

Oh my Greekie...

You hae me nervous lol. I am scheduled for 2/29/2012 and I only took off from work until March 5!! My doctor thinks I should be fine but I am a wreak about the "pain". Besides the gas...what pain issues am I facing?? I know everyone is different but lordy, lordy I don't pain very well.

Does anyone else have pressure in their chest? I had a hernia fixed too, thinking that may be what is wrong..

@WickedWitch -- Don't be too scared of the pain. Everyone's surgery experience is different, and while Greekie has been bothered by pain, I've had almost none. It varies from person to person. Your pain might not be bad at all! If you're really scared, remember than you will be prescribed painkillers to take home, and you can and should contact your doctor if they don't give you relief. Your doc won't want you to be in pain because it can interfere with the healing process.

Good luck!

What kind of Protein shakes are you drinking? Just curious because I drink one that is delicious!!!

I'm drinkIng the Protein shakes provided by TRUE RESULTS. chocolate & vanilla. They taste fine it's just the sweetness all day long gets to me, which is funny since my vice is sweets.

Thank you for the info. I'll be calling the office tomorrow to see if I'm able to drink any alternatives to the sweet shakes.

Thanks for the info Will, but as I was telling MyLuv2Drive, it's the sweetness that gets to me. If it was Protein enriched broth I think it would help. I'll be calling my clinic tomorrow to see if there's any alternatives.

Thank you morelgirl. I am definitely going to ask if sipping on broth in between shakes is ok. I just need to cut that overall sweetness lingering in my mouth and drinking Water in between isn't doing the trick.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
