First Fill And Frustrated

Recommended Posts

Please tell me if I'm being unrealistic. I had my first fill yesteray and was excited to think I'd be feeling hungry for longer periods of time. The last month was a tough one to get through, I felt like I was eating everything in front of me. Part of it was because I didn't feel full and the other part (at the end of the month) was from emotional eating.

I went in yesterday and had my first fill. I was told liquids for the rest of the day, mushies today and regular foods tomorrow. I did the liquids yesterday as directed and things seemed fine.

Today, I've had a Protein shake for Breakfast (normal) broke down and ate some sugar-free pudding two hours later and am now sitting here listening to my stomach growl and feeling uncomfortable. I haven't even come close to making it until lunch. (I have about 2 more hours to go)

I thought after the first fill, I'd be full longer, not shorter. Is this normal or am I misreading something my body is telling me? I feel frustrated. I'm still drinking as much water/crystal light tea, as I was before the fill, so why am I hungry sooner? Ugh.

Anyone have thoughts on this?

Yes you are being unrealistic. Both my docs have said if your band is half full or less (5cc in a 10cc band) you just really dont have your band doing anything at all...hang in there,,,this is Bandster Hell and it can be months before you get enough fill to have restriction!

I had my first fill 4.2cc in a 10cc band, it did nothing (but i was expecting that) had my second one last week, another 2.2 cc so total 6.4cc in a 10cc band, this one really worked, my doctor does it differently than yours, liquids for 3 days then mushies than regular foods, to give the swelling time to go down...I feel great restriction, eat 3 bites and i am done and also stay full for the entire day (have to remind myself to eat) I am down 11 lbs since last week :)...a lot of this journey is in your head if your hungry make healthy choices (no junk)....you will get there, be patient it takes time for this journey...Good Luck to you

Please know that everyone responds to adjustments differently. I've had four adjustments, I didn't feel real restriction until my third fill. I think I'm almost at the point they call the green zone.

Hang in there!

TOLD ME I SEEM TO BE ONE OF THE ONES WHO MIGHT NOT EVEN NEED A FILL...I GET FULL PRETTY QUICK AND AM SATISFIED AFTERWARD-I DO MY WALKS AND BAND EXERCISES AND MY JOB IS ALOT OF WALKING AND MOVING-I DIDN'T LOSE ANY WEIGHT FROM TIME OF SURGERY(14 PDS PRE-OP ONLY) AND WAS GETTING WORRIED..BUT SINCE STARTING BACK TO WORK I HAVE LOST 3 PDS...MY FILL APPT. IS 1-25, HE WILL SEE IF A FILL IS NEEDED OR NOT..I HAVE HAD A COUPLE OF STUCK EPISODES(WHICH WERE NO FUN WHATSO EVER) BUT, GOT THROUGH THEM-OTHERWISE I FEEL PRETTY GOOD-TAKING ONE DAY AT A TIME! GOOD LUCK TO ALL!

It's hard to judge the effect of a fill when you're doing a liquid or puree diet. Satiety is triggered by solid food, not sliders like pudding. Also, it can take up to 2 weeks for a fill to "kick in" (no doctor has ever been able to explain the why of that to me, but they all agree that it's true). Finally, it can take more than one fill for you to achieve optimal restriction. So hang in there, and if you haven't already scheduled another fill, do so now, so you have something to look forward to!

My first fill was 4 weeks after surgery, 4 cc's.

Second fill was 4 weeks after that. 8 weeks from surgery

In between I GAINED WEIGHT! Why? because after 4 weeks I was allowed normal food, and the band did not do anything at that point.

I did start to fell something after the 2nd, but not much. About a week after my third - BANG! All of a sudden.

tracyc,

for me it was 'emotional' after my first fill. i was told 2 days of Clear Liquids, 2 days of reg liquids and mushies on the 5th day. it was like having surgery all over again, i was sad to not be able to eat for nearly 5 days. but i've been very careful to follow the docs instructions and in that week i lost 5 pounds and it made everything ok. But, i'm not gonna lie I was HUNGRY for those 5 days. Remember that even with restriction liquids go right thru, so your gonna feel hunger. Wait and see how real food feels.

1) Mushies dont fill you like solids. Get cottage cheese for pst fills. pudding is empty calories

2) Took me many fills before restriction.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
