Question for Eating after the Surgery

Recommended Posts

I am not having surgery until February, but my nutrionist wanted me to start eating like I would if I had the band. So...I have been eating a Chobani with Kashi Cereal and an apple for Breakfast, and the small portion lunch and dinner. If I am doing it now, then how does it differ when the band is in there? This may be a really stupid question, but I just don't understand I guess. Do you really not have enough room for a full Chobani and an apple after surgery? Just thought I would throw my question out there, and see if any post-op bandsters can help me out!

Thanks!

I don't think I could eat that much. But I know some that can.

I think the major difference is that when you eat that much after the band you will be full and will have neither the desire or the ability to eat else. My doctor told me having WLS is about making you comfortable about eating smaller portions. Could you imagine eating that little with your current stomach and not being tempted to eat more when you got hungry or not noticing that you ate more than you were supposed to because your body didn't give you the signal that you were full.

I think that the exercise might be more about mentally preparing yourself for that being your "normal" portion size. I think for me, that is the part that I may struggle with, I'm so used to filling my plate and getting through most if not all of it and the coming to terms that the plate should be smaller and that I won't be able to finish it all is something I'm a little apprehensive about.

I went and bought some small appetizer bowls and plates this weekend. Really pretty and I moved the real dishes up to the top shelf.

I am only 17 days postop and still eating soft foods, but a container of Chobani fills me up. I couldn't manage Kashi cereal or an apple, too.

Thanks everyone! I get it now! I am glad I can ask questions to those who have been through it all! I really appreciate it!

I wish I could say that I couldn't eat that much, but I sure can. Even with 8.25ccs in my band, I am the only thing stopping myself from overeating. I can eat as much as I want still. But just because I can doesn't mean I should.

People who talk about being stuffed after a few bites... I just can't imagine what that's like.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
