Can I hurt my band with exercise?

Recommended Posts

Hi helpful friends!

I'm getting ready to start back to the gym and I'm really nervous. I'm 4 weeks out and will start back at 6 weeks. I've been on the treadmill a bit but my gym routine is fairly intense (way more intense than anything I've ever done before and I was actually loving it???). Anyway it's running lifting, dragging a 90lb sled, running holding a 20 lb weight over my head. It's a bootcamp program (similar to crossfit)

Anyway I have a friend that had a slipped band and they told her it probably happened from her lifting her sick mother. I asked my doctor and he said there's nothing o can do to hurt the band but I'm nervous. Have any of you done intense workout similar to this? Is 6 weeks enough time?

Anyway I have a friend who had a slipped band and

You probably should beguin a bit slower, and work your way up. At six weeks you're

a good way toward being healed, but still, I wouldn't go all out for another week or two.

Just my opinion.

I really don't think you can slip your band with exercise. I could be wrong though, I just don't see how. Your band should be sutured to your stomach and from my understanding the "slip" is not the band itself moving but your lower stomach pushing up through the band.

While I've not done a workout that intense, I think 6 weeks should be ample time for healing.

I did a boot camp for a year and a half -- but I didn't start it until I was about six months post-op. I didn't hurt my band in it at all, and now I do a spin workout that is equally intense (but less likely to leave me with bruises!). I haven't had any problems with my band as a result.

I really don't see how your band could slip from lifting someone, or from crunches or anything else. The one thing you'll want to be conscious of is not banging your port on the ground if you have to do "exploding" pushups (where you start from being flat, "explode" into pushup position, then go quickly back flat on the floor. I gave myself a bruise once doing that, but it was no big deal -- just a little tender at my port site for a day or so.

Kudos to you for getting serious about working out so early in the game. It's been absolutely KEY to me getting to goal and staying there (I've been under my goal for more than a year). Just listen to what your doctor says, and if something feels weird or like it might hurt you, stop doing it.

Best wishes,

Catherine

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
