Hi All: I was banded 7/25/11 and just experienced my first bad stuck episode. Has anyone else had a similar experience. I was away in Vegas with my husband and friends. First two days went well and ate cautiously with everyone. Monday about noon my hubby and I went for a late Breakfast and I ordered scrambled eggs with bacon. After 2 bites I knew I was in trouble. I think the bacon got stuck. Went to the ladies room to try to relieve it. Nothing seemed to work and I could not even get a sip of Water in. After 12 hours of trying everything I called my Dr at home. He said I could not stay too much longer without any liquids. He was afraid of dehydration. At this point we went to the closest ER and they put me on IV drip to avoid dehydration. They took a CAT scan to see if band slipped.....but thank God it did not. They said my esophagus was dilated but the band was in the right position. I still at this point was heaving, burping, hiccuping, just miserable feeling in my chest. Went back to hotel at 5:30 am and tried to get some sleep. Still bringing up slime every hour or so. Could this all have been caused by a very small piece of bacon???? Still could not get any liquids in so the next morning decided to get back home where my lapband doctor is as he said I should have an endoscope. At the airport it finally seemed to ease and by the time we landed at home I could finally drink liquids again. The pain was gone also and I knew it had passed. Today doing only liquids. Did not need to be scoped since I am drinking and feeling better now. They said my esophagus was dilated and I guess that happens when you get stuck. It was just so terrible to have this happen so far from home. Hope whatever happened in Vegas stays in Vegas.......and this never happens to me again. It lasted nearly 24 hours. Has anyone else experienced this?????

Ironically I got "stuck" in Vegas myself, eating tender beef!! My son was married there September 24th and I guess with the excitement, stress and weather change (I am a east coast girl) I got stuck. Fortunately for me it passed on its own and I did not have to go to an ER. I did for the remainder of the trip eat mainly Soup. So glad it turned out okay for you in the end.

This band is so moody or maybe I am, LOL. Somedays I can eat a half of a turkey sandwhich on a low carb bread and other days not tolerate bread, eggs, or low carb Pasta at all.

Since this has happened to me though I am paranoid when eating out!!!

I found this tip in Jean McMillan's book Bandwagon:Mix a lttle meat tenderizer with warm Water (about as much as a shot glass)and drink it.This will help remove the blockage. I hope you feel better!

Hi MelBanded: I also am an East Coast girl. Dr. said the plane ride might make the band tighter. But the first two nights I did fine eating out with friends. The band is really unpredictable. I also am very cautious now more than ever when eating anything. On only liquids and today is my third day. Afraid to eat anything solid. My throat and below (I guess esophagus area) is still sore. CAT

maybe Vegas is not the place to be for Banders. I had a small stuck episode out there this summer. mine passed thank goodness, but none the less, not any fun when you are far away from home. i hear ya on it being "unpredictable". the night before me getting stuck, i ate just fine, even had sushi with rice, actually ate alot. LOL! maybe that was my problem, i was still full and ate in the morning, PB some it up and the rest went down, but i stayed on liquids for the next 24 hours and was fine after that. i found that warm liquids tend to help the swelling. i am much more cautious now about eating.

Papaya Enzyme tablets!!!! I could not live without them. They sell at health food stores, Walmart, and sometimes K-mart. I keep them at home, in my purse and at work. Chew a few of them, they help get the stuck food to move down. I have been banded for almost 3 years, never had any fills and still get stuck. I get stressed very easily, the band is so UNpredictable. Some days I am okay, and others I have a hard time getting food down. I chose not to get any fills because it is so unpredictable and I do not want to not get my Protein or nourishment in every day. I am down 90 pds but gained 5 pds over last Christmas holiday and cannot get it off for the life of me. It is no fun to get stuck and I suspect the excitement of Vegas stirs things up with the band. I live an hour away from Vegas and I get very excited when I go there, so much to see and do and such wonderful food, it would be very hard not to get excited! You will learn when to really eat VERY little when you get excited and you will not get stuck. I still have problems and I have been banded for almost 3 years, maybe I am just a slow learner. Good luck on your journey and you will learn like me.

Thanks for the advice Sparkplug. I too have no fill in and dont want any since I'm losing about 2 lbs per week like this. I don't want to be more restricted than I am. I must be more careful when eating out with friends. I do think the excitement has something to do with it. Also talking too much when I eat out. I only had 2 bites of scrambled egg & bacon ? ? ? Guess it was the bacon. You are doing great 90 lbs lost is awesome. I still am happy with the band......I could have never lost 30 lbs so quickly. CAT

I am three days out, was banded on the 12th. So is it possible to have restriction without any fills? It sure sounds like it.

Yes you can have restriction w/o any fill. I was banded 7/25/11 and have restriction with none. I would not get a fill at this point since I am losing slow but steady. CAT

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
