Do I tell my trainer about the Lap Band?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have been working out regularly on my own at the gym and one of the trainers offered me a free session.. it went great. I am thinking of signing up for a three pack with him... my question is if I should tell him about my lap band??

I am not at all ashamed of it and all of my friend and co workers know and i have been more supportive then I could have ever dreamed. I am just not sure how it will be preceived in that environment and if it even matters..thoughts?

Of course you should tell the trainer, for several reasons.

1. Some trainers make you drink Water several times during a work out. You need to be careful with this. It could make you throw up.

2. Some exercises press on your abdomen- be careful of your port site.

3. All lap band patients should wear a medical alert tag in case something should happen that you can't speak for yourself.

3. it is important to get an adequate amount of Protein so that you can build muscle.. www.myvi.net/katelm

4. You should be proud of the band.... and your trainer will be proud to be part of your journey to better health.

Best of luck to you!!!

Of course you should tell the trainer, for several reasons. I disagree , I think the decision to tell or not is a personal one.

1. Some trainers make you drink Water several times during a work out. You need to be careful with this. It could make you throw up. Just drink (sip) at your own speed.

2. Some exercises press on your abdomen- be careful of your port site. Agreed. You could just tell the trainer you have had a recent op and need to be careful. I am sure you can come up with something if you don't want to tell.

3. All lap band patients should wear a medical alert tag in case something should happen that you can't speak for yourself. This is overkill. If you are ever in a situation where you need urgent lifesaving help the band is the least of your worries. Plus with XRAYS etc the med facility should see it anyway.

3. it is important to get an adequate amount of Protein so that you can build muscle.. www.myvi.net/katelm

4. You should be proud of the band.... and your trainer will be proud to be part of your journey to better health.

Best of luck to you!!!

i work with a PT and I didnt tell him. Its no ones business. I have had no issues. I drink Water when I want to. As far as exercises, you can do anything with the band so its not an issue. Just my opinion. :)

I wouldnt feel compelled to say anything. My band doesnt stop me doing anything, I've never had any issues drinking and I agree, if by some slim chance I should keel over and be transported by ambulance to hospital, they're goign to contact your next of kin, who DOES know. The trainer is hardly going in the ambulance with you and they're not likely to try to give you and endoscopy at the gym, so there's no particular safety in your trainer knowing.

Of course, say somethinig if you feel that way inclined. I like people to know so they dont think I"m some superhuman freak of amazing willpower. Its a positive story, a tool/surgery that can help people who think they're in a hopeless situation and if I think it will help someone I speak up.

Thank you for all of your feedback. I think i will go through the next session and get more of a vibe on him and then decide.

Jadebrasil.. I live in Los Angeles and belong to 24 hr. Fitness... it is 150 for three sessions. He will write up a plan for me to stick to after those three sessions and give me goals to work towards. It is really a great thing to help push you a little harder than we typically push ourselves.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks
