WLS is the easy way

Recommended Posts

this has me absolutely fasinated now that I think about this, and looking at all the reacations.

Oh, and Dawgy-dear, I'm the Turtle Spoke's Model. I might, on a good week, lose 4 ounces. But most people aren't turtles, if they were, very few people would be getting WLS.

The passion around this facinates me.

I know all about the pain of surgery, bla bla bla. Been there, done that, got the beautiful purple lines. I'm talking about after we are all healed up from the incisions, the cuts and wounds, the pain meds just a distant hazy memory.

But I'm serious, hasn't the weight loss success you've achieved with the band been easier than "just" diet and excersize alone? I know we've all tried everything, every crazy diet from only eating one food, to only one kind of food, to just Soup to electric shock therapy to only eating one color of food per day (oh today is Tuesday, only white foods, tomorrow I only eat pink food....) you know the crazy diets.

But with the band, and I'm not talking to the Turtles (we are special), hasn't this been the easiest weight you've lost and kept off? Or maybe The Turtle Tribe too. I know that while I'm not losing, I'm not gaining, and that is worth something too.

But why the pasion? Why do so many of us bristle at it being cheating? Why so many bristle at it being the "easy" way?

Is it because at some level we figure that we have to "work" for it to be meaningful? Is there something else that I don't understand?

I'd like to sit on whoever says WLS is the easy way out, and ask them do i fell any lighter. 7 months after surgery I'm stressing about gaining and losing weight, eating and exercise.....The easy way out of what....my butt:think

I love my band and I'm glad I did it but it is not easy. Easy is sitting around eating what I want and poof the weight is gone and my body is perfect not sagging where the fat once filled it out.:faint:

No, that's not easy, that's not even realistic. Although we do have some bandsters who've lost weight that way.

Of course there is hard for for many of us. I'm talking about "relatively" easy, if that makes it more tollerable for some.

I had an interesting conversation with the fitness director at the gym I work at today. I work out quite a bit, more than the average joe for sure. I'm at the gym 5 days a week at least, sometimes more. Last week I did 7.5 hours of t-shirt soaking cardio, and 3 hours of weight training. I think my average calorie intake a day last week was around 1300 calories. I gained 2lbs....actually I gained 6lbs, but 4lbs came off over the weekend so I'm guessing it was Water weight.

Anyway I was talking to the fitness director and telling her this. She said, well maybe you aren't eating enough. Okay, maybe. I really want to get my metabolic rate checked soon. Get this...she eats around 1800-2000 calories a day, and runs 30 minutes 3-4 times a week. She didn't mention if she did any weight training. So lets review, she eats 500-700 calories MORE a day than me, and did 2 hours of cardio versis my 7.5. She weighs maybe 110 soaking wet?

The lapband is not the easy way out, because as you can see above I am working it hard. I try to stick mainly to protiens, I don't drink any calories except the occasional protien shake. Overall I'm eating healthier than I have ever eaten in my entire life. I'm a bit on the frustrated side right now because of the weight gain. I had someone say something today that implied that this was the easy way and it kinda of bugged me...mainly because I don't think this is the EASY way.

dragonwillow, the trainer was probably right. are you going to up your calories?

Exactly right, Dana2! The band is a medical tool - like the procedures you mentioned and just basic medications! We as "bandies" have no need to drop our heads in shame!! (Didn't we do enough of that when we were at our heaviest?) We have a duty to ourselves, as human beings, to take care of this vehicle that we (our minds and souls) travel around in!! If that means taking an antiobiotic, or putting on make up, or having the band procedure it is my RIGHT to do the best I can for me and the rest of the world can go hang!! It is no one else's business!!

We all know our feeling and reasons for having the surgery to begin with. (Think about them for just a moment......) Now, are you sorry that you had the surgery???? The only way other people can make us feel bad is if we let them do it!!!! Do not let people, even those with "the best intentions," make you feel unworthy of feeling good about yourself and your accomplishments! It doesn't matter if you have lost 20 lbs and have 100 to go, or lost 100 and have 20 to go -- improving YOUR life took, and takes, daily effort and work!!

Be proud of what you have accomplished; what you are accomplishing; and who you are!!!! No matter what your size, you have the right to be happy with yourself and feel good!!!! Do not give anyone the power to take that away from you!!!!

God bless us each and everyone!!!!!

Terri

I need to put my 2 cents in here. I don't care if this is the easy way or the hard way or the sorta easy sorta hard way. I had a heart attack 3 years ago. I have a wife and 2 children and I want to spend many more years with them. I have been on a million diet plans I have walked/ran thousands of miles and I have lifted more weights than most could imagine. I know that obese people spend for more time trying to get healthy then most non obese people. I know that there are many factors that come in to play that have made me obese and I know that the reasons people are obese are very unique to the individual.

I want to live for many more years and I was willing to let someone cut me open and wrap a band around my stomach so I would have a better chance of survival. If anyone tells you this is the easy way you tell them for me that they can kis my Big Fat (Soon to be less so) ass

Or to do a cycling class at 260lbs.

I know what you mean about gym-rats. The teacher of my spin class gave me grief about only doing 15 minutes of the class & then moving on to a treadmill. At least I was moving! And then I found out that the bikes were only rated for up to 250 pounds, lol. I'm lucky mine didn't collapse under me!

Hi Vine,

The easy way out is to stay fat and keep eating crap. LOL The lapband made it somewhat easier to lose the weight, but keeping it off is the hardest thing I have had to do so far and I fight this battle everyday. I am sitting here eating ham blocks instead of the pop tart I really wanted. The lapband really is a tool only. You get what you put into it and it did help me get a jumpstart on the weight loss, but the band didnt take my butt to the gym for two years, nor did it make my food choices. I dont care what anyone thinks about how I got there.

No one wants to be a "cheater" - we all want to be known for our "fair play."

Next time someone tells you WLS is cheating, say it would only be cheating if the game were fair and we all started at the same place.

WOW,. this is an interesting thread. Thanks so much, Vinequeen for posting it - sure giving me a lot to think about - here is my 2 cents.

Easy, hmmm - was the decision to have the band easy after trying virtually every diet known to man from WW to Jenny Craig to pills to Nutrisystems to LA Weightloss to going it alone, etc, etc... after being overweight my entire life (I weighted 29 lbs at 9 months old) and morbidily obese the last 20 years? YOU BET! I will use whatever I can to help get and keep the weight off.

After reading all the recent posts I can see that I have been very fortunate in my family, friends and support system. No one has ever said to me that I am taking the easy way out (of course, I probably would have slapped them silly, esp after spending a night in agony with severe chest pains because a small piece of bread was stuck in my chest (and believe me it will be a LONG time before I try bread again and it was toasted!!) I have never had this much success losing weight and even with all the side effects (PB's, sliming, frothing, etc) I LOVE my band and if it is considered easy, I will take it!!!

It is funny because after going thru the tests for the surgery, it was discovered that part of my problem is that my stomach emptys extremely fast. People would say only eat until you are full, and quite frankly until I had the band, I never had that overstuffed, OMG I can't eat another bite feeling (and it took me several weeks of PBing to figure out what that actually was - LOL). For the stomach emptying test, I was told to expect to be at the hospital for 4 hours, I was completely done in under 30 minutes - everyone was shocked and it was quite a revalation (sp?) to me.

Anyway, if this is the easy way out, I will take it. I will do anything to have a healthier, happier me who will be around long enough to see my 2 beautiful daughters grown and happy.

Good luck everyone on this incredible journey we are all on.

Julie

And about the people who get the band with only 60 or 80 pounds to lose. I used to think that was rediculous.. until I realized just how much my life would have changed had I been able to have this band when I was 23 and hit 200 the first time.

Thank you, it feels great to have support like that. :clap2:

As far as it really being easy...hmmmm...Maybe when I actually lose a pound I could let you know.

Someone that I told about the band said to me "Isn't that kind of like cheating?"

HA HA!!

How did I miss this post a second ago? That's a good one. Cheating like what? TrimSpa? Zantrex? Fiber pills? Phentermine? Mini-thins? Let's see what else have I tried... What have other's tried? hmmmmm..

Anyway, I am not laughing at you, that comment just really struck me. What a giggle. But I agree with you, if it is cheating, good for me. It's a much healthier way for me to cheat than all that speed I took. (I know, sad but true. :frusty: )

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
