curious about sugar free restrictions

Recommended Posts

just curious if there is a reason for the dr only recommending sugar free popsicles and sugar free Jello and pudding? Is it due to the high calories in non sugar free or is there some other reason?

It's the calories.

I believe it's because of the calories as well. However, I am a diabetic and sometimes the sugar free stuff has more carbs in it, which I do NOT want so I look at the labels and then go from there. My carb intake is what I'm taking to keep down, so I'll take a little more calories if the carbs are less in regular poducts and not the sugar free kind. Just a thought.

has anyone ever tried the soft serve frozen yogurt - fat free - like at Cherry berry or Orange Leaf? I had a couple bites tonight and it was good too, i used to could eat a whole one 30 oz, plus tons of toppings, tonight i was able to get 10 bites down - no toppings....that is PROGRESS!!!!

I always say the same thing. I am not diabetic so why all the sugar free things. I am assuming its the calories too. I have to say all this sugar free stuff tends to give me a headache. Does this happen to anyone else?

I was told to stick to 2 grams of sugar per entree. I have lost very well sticking to this plan. I have tried cutting back on fat and such in the past to no success. Cutting my sugar down to 2 grams per entree really seems to have made a difference for me. I have lost consistently, and live by the no more than 2 grams rule. I swear by it. I do eat sugar free items but in moderation. I love chocolate and Cookies, so I will have sf ones in moderation and it helps a lot. I have never lost like I am now and I truly believe it is because of the sugar rule. Hope this helps.

Yep, me too. I actually had to make sure to list aspartame as an allergy when I got banded so they wouldn't give me any sugar free items. Aspartame is the worst for me; it causes a Migraine with vomiting within minutes of ingesting even a small amount. They all give me headaches though.

The diet industry has been selling us "fat free" and "low fat" for decades now, when it's the sugar that really matters. It is empty calories that get burned very quickly and lead to increased hunger/craving of more sugar. The nice thing is that now the sugar-free items are often made with sugar substitutes other than aspartame, so if you have a bad reaction to that, look for other sugar subs like stevia or splenda.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
