No problem drinking large amounts/chugging

Recommended Posts

I was banded a week ago (the dr put about 2cc into my 14cc band at surgery), and from day one, I've pretty much had no problem drinking Water like normal or taking normal-sized sips of broth/juice/protein shakes, etc.

I have read a lot of other people say that they are unable to take normal sized sips without feeling tight or constricted after surgery, especially week 1 when we're still swollen and healing.

I was wondering if anyone had insight on this. I haven't chugged a whole bottle of water per se, but if I'm thirsty in the middle of the night, I've had no problem taking 4-5 large gulps continuously (not putting the glass down) and I haven't felt pain or discomfort.

What were you guys' experiences in this regard? Am I out of the ordinary? Did I just heal faster because I'm 22? Is my band superrrr loose?

I was banded on May 25. I could also very easily gulp down liquids and I still can now after 2 fills. (Still not tight enough) I suppose I was really loose to. I don't think that age has anything to do with the healing process...but everyone is different. Good luck hun!

My band must have been really tight. I'm 6 weeks out and can drink maybe 2-3 gulps... But not huge gulps. Does that make sense? But it's taken me some time to get to that point. I had major swelling after surgery so when i was 1 week post op like I couldn't get all my Water in... To be honest, I'm a little jealous of you haha. I think you're probably more of the norm. :-)

I think with in a couple weeks of surgery I was able to drink quite a bit at a time. I was concerned and asked my doctor if this was ok and he said as long as it is going down it is fine. He said for the most part liquid passed through the band very quickly. I have almost 5ccs in an 11 or 14 cc (not sure which one I have) band and now have to slow down my drinking, especially early in the morning. I can feel the Water going down for about half the day, then the band loosens up some. Good luck to you!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
