What's the scoop on eating and drinking

Recommended Posts

Newly banded. 2 weeks out and trying to get all the "to do's" and " no no's" down. Is it terribly bad to take a few sips of something while eating? I know my Dr told me it helps push your solids down and you will get hungry faster. But will a sip here and there mess things up?? Also, how long before and after eating do you drink??

I physically CAN'T drink anything for about an hour after eatng or I'll throw it up. I can feel when the food is low enuf for me to drink. Makes it hard eating spicy foods. I've heard to the reason not to drink while eating is that it pushes the food past your pouch faster, making you hungrier longer.

My Dr. said if you drink right away you flush the food out and lose the nutrients nescessary to keep you healthy. Plus I just don't want to risk that nor the chance for hair loss. My challenge is eating a bite every 2 minutes and then being done in 45. I can't do it yet but will keep trying.

You won't lose any nutrients by drinking, your stomach doesn't absorb nutrients - your intestines do.

The issue with drinking during meals is that it will help float some food in your pouch and will help slide other food down through the stoma (hole) faster.

It's like having a funnel full of grains of rice - they'll go at a certain pace and may slow down here and there, pour Water at the same time and the rice will never slow or get stuck and it will flow freely.

The best thing to do is to stop drinking before you eat (whenever) then don't drink or only drink super tiny sips during the meal (once you hit your green zone you likely won't be able to drink), then avoid drinking any fluids for at least 20-30 minutes after.

Once you're at the right spot you likely won't have any desire or even the ability to drink during or immediately after a meal.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
