No Hunger After Surgery

Recommended Posts

Has anyone else observed this, will it pass? Or is it here to stay (hopefully!!)

I was banded on 8/17 and besides my brain wanting me to eat (or in my case drink) I have really NOT been hungry.

That's perfectly normal. However, to burst your bubble..........it will subside. I have heard of people not being hungry for about 3 weeks.

I did not even want food for the first week. Even cooked a huge Breakfast a few days after my surgery for my family and I didn't even care that I col not eat any of it. You will eventually get hungry, but make sure you are getting something in your stomach.

I am 9 months post op and still don't experience hunger :) I felt absolutely no hunger for about 5-6 months, then have only felt hunger pains maybe 6 times since then. I don't know why some of us experience different hunger issues than others, maybe it has to do with how the surgeon places the band. Good luck on your journey!!!

The anesthesia will definately keep your appetite at bay for at least a week, this has been my experience every time I've been put under. I can't even stand the smell of food for about ten days!

I was like that for a good 12 weeks after surgery and in that time, the weight literally fell off me. It wasnt only lack of hunger, but absolutel lack of appetite or interest in food - that forgetting to eat feeling. It did subside and I've never been able to get it back sad to say, but I still went on to be very successful.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
