Did not know there was Fluid in my band

Recommended Posts

I was banded 10/21/10. I lost weight very well for the first 4 months then i just stalled. I never had a fill. the doctor and nurse didn't think I needed one because I was doing well. Well after months of struggling to lose a pound we decided to get a fill. Much to my surprise (and the nurse that has been seeing me since surgery) I had 4cc in my band at the time of surgery.!!! There was no notation in my file. Even the doctor forgot that he did it. Well I got an additonal .5 cc. It is so weird. I feel like i did after surgery. I hope this does the trick!!! I feel a bit hoodwinked that I did not know I had Fluid in the band.

I asked my surgeon when he came to visit my hospital bed as I was recovering from surgery. He said he'd put 3cc in my band during surgery. He said he does that routinely, because it helps the band stay in place more easily, and once stitched in place, it was less likely to slip. He's done a gazillion band surgeries, so I guess he knows what he's talking about. :)

Rather than feel like you were hoodwinked, maybe you should look at it the other way around. For me, it's better to discover you had Fluid in your band that you didn't know about, than to think you did and find out you didn't.

At my first fill, they removed all Fluid from my band, just to confirm how much was in it. (It was actually 3.2cc, as I recall.) Then they put it all back in, plus another 2cc past that. I've since had several more fills, and am currently at 9cc in a 14cc band.

Good luck on your journey!

Dave

I started out with about 2cc's at the time of surgery. I think a lot of doctor's do this and most people don't know. It's funny how some people brag about losing all of their weight without ever having a fill but I bet if some of them checked with their doctors they have something in that band!

They told me that my band was empty too but when I had my first fill she pulled out 4 cc's so it wasn't really empty.

My doc did this to me too with my second band.

I could feel a difference when I woke from surgery, it felt like something was tight around my stomach but I could get liquids and food down.

I was even eating almost a whole horse so I thought it was because my band was empty.

When I went for my first fill I asked my doc are you sure you didnt put anything in my band. He said no I didn't but then poked me and voula 4cc came out. He checked the records and sure enough there was a little note but he forgot (he never puts fills in during surgery but since I was rebanded he did because the band was loose apparently).

Anyways it was no problem for me, just a little surprise

I, unfortunately was one of those people who went 2 weeks post op thinking there was fluid in my band, to finding out there was none! The surgeon apparently said something because my fiance' heard him say it, but I missed that bit of info <_< LOL ...anywayssss...

Why should you feel hoodwinked? I'd be happy that you were doing so well for so long. You got a head-start by having a little fill put in at the time of surgery.

I know I came out of surgery with 3cc's in mine and I didn't go through much of the bandster hell that I hear others complaining about. I was grateful that I had some help from the get-go.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
