I have written on this site a few times, but am looking for support during this time of depression, frustration and defeat. In a nutshell, I was banded last September and only 7 short days after being banded I started having drainage from my port incision. The next day it was confirmed that my port area was infected. My Dr. cut open my port incision to allow the area to drain better (I packed it twice/day) and I was put on antibiobics. Three weeks later it was no better, and I had surgery to remove my port. Three VERY long months of using a wound vac 24/7 and having nurses come 3 times a week to treat me later, I was finally off the wound vac and my hole was closed!! This was on January 2nd of this year. January 11th I had a new port placed. January 15th my new port incision started draining and I was hospitalized. The next day my Dr. confirmed that my NEW port was infected and I had surgery (my 4th band related surgery in less than 5 months) to remove both the port as well as the band that same day.:faint: My Dr. said that he checked the band when he was replacing my 2nd port, and it looked 'prestine'. No errosion, or slippage. He said it looked perfect even as he was removing it. Of course, there is much more to the story, but I have journaled it all on the website at the bottom of my signature if you would really like to see exactly what took place during my band journey the last 5 months. I have many pictures too, so consider yourself warned. I am currently back on a wound vac :cry for this newest hole left by my port infection. Also, during this last surgery my Dr. (I had no idea he was going to do it) opened up my HEALED port scar and fixed it so that it wouldn't be such a big divot (which I could have cared less about). Nine days later, this new incision is still draining and I'm more than a little paranoid that it will become infected again and I might end up with multiple wound vac sites. God, I sure hope not!

So, here I am. I have lost 46 lbs since September. It's not really been the result of the band though, as I've never had a port to get fills with and have had very little restriction during the entire 5 months. I am, however, deathly afraid of gaining back the weight I've gone through hell to lose. I would be SO happy if I could lose another 50 lbs, but right now I'm more concerned with not sabotaging myself and gaining weight back. We all know how easy it is to do! I feel very alone. I am not banded anymore, and feel uncomfortable visiting some of the message boards I have frequented for years. This is all so new still that it's hard for me to hear others' victories when I feel like I had just lost the battle. It took me 4 long years to be able to be banded, and I WAS banded for 5 months. It has consumed my life for almost 4 1/2 years and now I am left with nothing but scars and a wound vac. I hope this makes sense? I was very happy (although it makes me feel bad to even admit!) to see that this site has a forum for those of us who've had complications. They DO happen as much as people want to believe that the band is perfect and simple. Sorry this is so long, but as you might expect my emotions are running high. I have more to say, but will save it for another time. Thank you for your support! Erin

I am so sorry that you had to go thorough all of this. What does 'prestine' mean and why did he have to remove the band?

I am so sorry that you had to go thorough all of this. What does 'prestine' mean and why did he have to remove the band?

I took prestine to mean that it looked perfect. Didn't look like there was, or had ever been infection by my band, no signs of erosion, no slippage...perfect. I had him remove the entire band. In my mind, the band does no good without a port to be able to do adjustments. You hear EVERYONE talk about finding the 'sweet spot' after 4-5 fills (usually). Well, without a port, there's no such thing. To remove a 2nd port implies that at some point I would have to have a 5th surgery to give me another new port, which would once again run the risk of infection. I've just gone through too much and my family is at the breaking point as well. I have 5 children and none of this has been fun for any of us. My youngest just turned 3 and my oldest is 15. They need me. They need me healthy, not battling infections and spending time in the hospital. My husband has had to take literally weeks off work to help me, and my insurance company has been billed over $150,000 for all of my surgeries, wound vac, specialized nursing visits etc, and I still have a wound vac (almost $9000/month). There comes a point when you just have to re-think what's important. While I wish with all my heart that the band had worked for me, MY reality is that it didn't. That for some reason it took 7 days the first time and only 4 days the 2nd, for an infection to form at my port site. How do I know it wouldn't have only taken 2 days with a 3rd port?! At first my Dr. didn't want to remove the band, but after thinking about it overnight and listening to my feelings about it, he agreed it was probably best. I am still grieving the loss though. Hope this makes sense?

Sorry to hear that you have had to go through so much is such a short time and still end up losing your band. I wish you a speedy recovery and wish you all the best. This is still a great support site for the non banded as well. You can still practice the band rules even if you don't have a band. (huuugs)

What an incredibly strong person you are. Don't give up hope now. Like Banded for Life said, you can still follow the same rules you would have with your band. And stay connected here for ongoing support and encouragement. Try to trust that all things happen for a good reason.

My heart goes out to you. I would be devistated too.

*big hugs*

Oh, Erin, what an awful experience that must have been. Do you have any idea at all why you kept getting infected? What was the problem?

I totally hear you about not wanting to prolong this unpleasantness to save your family the troubles. I would have done exactly the same thing. It's very unusual for a bandster to have this kind of ongoing problem without a reason, though, so I hope you talk with your doctor to find out why your body refused to heal. That could be a sign of an underlying undiagnosed medical disorder.

Get better, girlie! Your kids need you and I know you want to feel healthy again. Big hugs and healthy vibes to you!!

Erin, I recently had my band removed. I also went through a year of infection, wound packing, 2 port removals, etc. I'm fighting the battle on my own now, and I'm damn proud of myself. So far I've lost 11 pounds since band removal, but I keep gaining and losing the last few over and over. It's not easy to pass up goodies, breads, sodas but it CAN be done.

Get on an eating plan. It doesn't have to be perfect, but find something that works and dig the determination out of all this frustration and join us non-bandsters in the fight.

Erin, I am so sorry you had such a long hard struggle. Who could possibly blame you for being discouraged. You are right though, who is to say what would have happened next with another port in place. You need to be able to take care of that beautiful family of yours, and give your body time to heal from these infections. I think you'll remain a bandster at heart and continue in your wls journey. GET BETTER QUICK. (((hugs))

Hi Erin,

Wow........I am so sorry to hear of your struggles. We all think that we aren't going to be the one with the problems & that our bands will work perfectly. I'm sure you were very surprised when it happened to you. I read your story & you were in perfect health before surgery!! You would think you wouldn't have had any complications at all!! I cried as I read your story because it could have been any of us. I am sorry the complications happened to you. It doesn't seem fair.

You CAN do this on your own!! If you think about it, you really did lose your 46 lbs. all on your own because you never had a working band. THAT IN ITSELF IS AMAZING!!! I have had a working band since July & I haven't lost that much.

Keep your chin up!! You sound like a wonderful mother & your kids need a happy, healthy Mom!! PLEASE hang around here because you'll find lots of support from other bandsters who have lost their bands. We all sympathize with you & wish you the best!!!

Good luck Erin!

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
