Diet and Band Failures

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery 1-1/2 years ago and lost 60 pounds initially (mostly due to pre-op, post-op) and liquid diet. I have gained more than 20 lbs back, my band has never been completely filled, and I feel like I have let myself down, and

the band has let me down. Would like to hear from others...The band has not been the miracle it was advertised to be for people who have tried every diet and failed...

Not sure why you are posting in the January 2011 category...we all just were banded a few months ago...but I hope you can find your motivation again and maybe talk to your doc or clinic, they may have suggestions for you.

The band can't do it for you....it sounds like you gave up on the process, though. It is a journey, not a destination. Getting the band unfortunately won't make us eat 100% right and drop all the weight right away - we will still struggle with the things that got us overweight in the first place, but it is a tool to help us along the way. I know most people think that we get the band and then we coast and the weight drops off without any work and that couldn't be further from the truth!

To me it sounds like you need to start over - go back to your doctor and get back on track....you might need a fill and to attend some support groups to get your enthusiasm back for the band and to get back on board? I know when I am struggling the last thing I want to do is go hear folks who are doing great -- but that is exactly what we need!

Hang in there - you can turn this around....the band is still there, waiting to be utilized! We are here to encourage you, too! You can do it!

Thanks, Kim. I guess I have given up. My dietician told me that there's hardly anything in my band, so I'm certain they are not giving me complete fills. When I ask the nurse, she tells me I don't need to know how much is in the band. I think the doctor and his nurse who does the fills have given up on me as well. Does the band help you to eat less? You have been so successful! I have never experienced the full feeling in my band like some of the ladies in my group. They are forced to stop after eating tiny amounts; I have never experienced that type of assistance and I need it desperately. I was told that the band only works when you go on a strict diet and stay on it...then it kicks in. If I could go on a strict diet and keep the weight off, I wouldn't have needed the band in the first place. I know I need to start over; I'm just praying for the strength to start the high protein-low carb diet one more time. What I really need to do is forget about the band, since I have never felt like I had one. My hunger is in my head...always has been. Thanks for your comments. You should be so proud of yourself and your success!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
