Many questions...need answers :)

Hello all, this is my first time on the site as I just had my very brief consult with the surgeon on Wednesday. I felt very rushed, was handed a packet on info to read and told to start making consult appointments right away. I felt so rushed that I couldn't even gather my thoughts to ask the right questions, it was overwhelming. I did feel comfortable however...the surgeon is my primary's husband and the nurse was very comforting..here are some questions that I'd like to have answered by the time I see him again, on 6/22..thanks for you help!

1. I am 26, newly married, want children in the future...can I stay banded while pregnant? Is it safe?

2. Since I am only 26, the thought of having this band in for the rest of my life seems scary..any thoughts on this?

3. How many nutritionist visits do I need? My insurance covers the surgery but not nutritional counseling (so dumb!) so this is a huge out of pocket expense for me.. I'd like to get the consult and that's it...especially since I've been to 2 nutritionists in the past- learned a lot but couldn't keep the weight off.

4. How much food will I actually be able to eat once I am recovered?? I def don't want to give up food for the rest of my life... I actually have great eating habits.. no junk, no sweets, really very healthy.. just overeat at times and get hungry very often, I am fearful of those hunger pains so I eat..its hard to explain...

5. Any advice to someone who is in the very early stages of this process?

Thanks again!

You can eat a lot of stuff with the band, and some things you will find that you might have to give up. (MAYBE)

A lot of people average abut a cup of food per meal. I eat more, or less, or the same it depends on the food, how it's going down for you,

If your having a good day Arguing will cause mine to feel tighter, so I can't eat as much.

I drink Protein shakes for the Protein.< /p>

The band for the rest of your life..... Well it is a Tool. So it will go bad someday, and the idea is to get it updated. So unless you can learn to eat properly, and control the Hunger Beast. you will probably be Banded. If you can do this ! Then Good for you...

Things have changed since I got banded I guess. I only saw a Dietitian 1 time. But once you are Banded at Henry Fords, she is yours forever.

I see you suffer from the Hunger Beast, with enough fills, that can go away.

A lot of people who never were able to get pregnant (CO MORBITY) They get pregnant when they have lost weight. Not sure how that works.

Hope this helps.

Shirley.

Thanks for your reply Shirley...hearing from those who have or are going through it already inform me and interest me more than the research/clinical info. I feel hopeful for the first time, in a long time...so I hope this is the right path for me. I'll keep you posted!

You can get pregnant while banded, but they suggest not for 18 months after, and the band will be unfilled.

The band is a permanent thing, and when filled properly, you should be able to eat about a cup of food. BUT you can't drink until an hour or so after you have eaten and you can't drink while you eat.

Not sure about the nutritionist, though. I think it depends on your surgeon. I had a one time fee of $400, but can still see the nutritionist when I want.

Good luck!!

The band is perfect for someone wanting a baby in the future. You will have to wait a year or two after getting banded to have a baby. They will leave the band in place, and unfill it while your preg. then after you have the baby they can start to refill it so you can loose your baby wt. I'm not sure about the nutrician visits. I only had one via phone, but I was private pay. Each insurance seems to be slightly different in what they require. The doctor like you to have the nutrician consults too, but the insurance will have a set number or visits or months on a diet. The phone consult helped me alot. She didn't try to talk me out if it which I am grateful! She did however give me good advice and tips for making it through the 2 week pre-op diet, as well as the diet for after the lapband! The doctor explained to me that it is a tool you will have the rest of your life, but it is easily removed if ever needed. I'm 72 hours post-op so I can't help you much with the amount of food that you'll be able to eat in the long run.

Welcome! There is a pregnancy forum here at LBT. I believe most women get their bands unfilled while preggers to allow for more nutrition.

Sometimes bands need to be replaced. You can search pubmed for studies on it. It is an implanted device, and something to be considered.

Tell your surgeon you have worked with nutritionists in the past. I only had to do one consultation to be sure I understood how I should eat post-banding. As she is in my surgeon's office, it was part of an insurance-covered office visit with my surgeon.

How much you will be able to eat will depend on your restriction level. I am in maintenance mode now. I eat about 1500-1700 calories a day. A meal for me is about 3 oz of solid Protein, 1/2 cup of veggies, and some starch. I do not eat low-carb. I still eat all the foods I used to with the exception of very soft doughy breads (they get stuck) and white meat chicken (also gets stuck). I still have my junk food treats. Just not as often, and not as much. If I cannot eat solid Protein, my surgeon wants me to come in for an unfill. It is unacceptable to him for me to rely on Protein shakes and "slider" foods--foods that slide right on through the band. Those are foods like Soups, yogurt, and highly processed junk like chips, Cookies, ice cream, etc.

Advice for the early stages...don't get caught up in Last Supper Syndrome. you WILL eat your favorites again. There is no need to gorge yourself on food like you will never eat it again. My diet is pretty "normal" now. Except when my stomach is irritated from a bad stuck episode, most people watching me would not know that I've had weight loss surgery.

Don't stock up on boodles of Protein Shakes until you know that your surgeon wants you on them long-term. I bought a bunch of the stuff after reading on here how many people continue to use them after banding only to find out that my surgeon doesn't want me using them. He wants me eating my calories. I was only allowed them during the full liquid phase of post-op.

This forum is a great place for support. My surgeon has support groups, but his are too late in the evening for me to attend as I start work early in the morning. I hang out here a lot and credit it with with my continued success. It helps me keep my head in the game. In real life I only know one other banded person. It's great to come here and be able to connect with peeps who "get it!"

Thank you..you reply was very helpful. I guess that's my concern - I don't want to live on mushy foods or shakes for the rest of my life...I do want to eat reg food. Hearing that you can eat a full meal..just less of it, is great! I have the knowledge about measuring food and the amount I SHOULD be eating now...but my stomach/mind fights me on it. I get hungry all the times and I hate the feeling of hunger pains- shakey, light-headed, irritable, headache...if I didn't have that intense physical disturbance, I'd be able to do this on my own...but I think I've stretched my stomach to a place where it just wants to hold more food. I will have all of my consults and referral letters done by my next appointment with my surgeon on the 22nd, so I am excited that this could be my last FAT summer :) Thanks again for all your advice...I will be attending a support group at my surgeon's office on the 27th.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
