Seriously frustrated with food

Recommended Posts

I was banded on May 14 2010 and since them I've lost a little over 100lbs which I am extremely happy with. I've lost count on the number of fills I've had but I have not had one in maybe 4 months. After I had my last fill the variety of foods in which I could eat became very slim and they continue to lessen as time passes. I can no longer eat any kind of meat, fish, poultry in fact the only thing that gives me no discomfort what so ever is popcorn which I find off. I've been surviving off of Soups, like a half cup or ao and sometimes can't even get that down. Everything gets stuck in the mornings it's worse and I can't burp. I feel a burp coming on and then it just gets stuck in my throat. I don't know what to do. And at times I regret what I've donto myself but then I think of not having to shop in the plus size section and think maybe I can live off liquids the rest of my life:( my next drs appt is this coming Tuesday and I'm hoping after I tell him all this he'll take some Fluid out of my band if that's the problem. Has anyone else experienced this? I just want to live a normal life. Eating is not something I look forward to at all. I just feel sad and unhealthy

I haven't had my band very long but I would think they would take some Fluid out. I had my first fill last week and at first was doing good but this week has been a struggle keeping down dinner. I seem to do ok during the day with Breakfast and lunch but I have thrown up my dinner everyday this week - usually because of whatever meat. Do you think maybe we aren't chewing enough? The other thing could be fluids - I know you aren't suppose to drink a 1/2 hour before or a 1/2 hour after - would that contribute to the trouble?

It's not the food to blame, it's your band. You're obviously too tight and need a small unfill. You've resorted to slider foods and liquids to get your calories in; that's a big no no with the band and is a completely obvious sign that you need a slight unfill.

Congrats on your 100lb loss; I was banded in May 2010 as well. Really though, get an unfill. What you're doing isn't healthy.

Yep you are definitely too tight. You need to be able to eat solid Protein e.g meat, chicken. fish to take full advantage of your band. If you cant eat these you need some Fluid taken out.

Had my 4th fill a month ago, eating became just plain painful. I could keep things down but not without a lot of effort and sliming. Went in this week and had .2cc taken out. Feel great, can eat any meat but have GREAT restriciton, 3 oz of protien fills me right up! I eat very normal foods and have few problems. It's more how I eat than what I eat.

You are simply too tight which can be very detrimantal. You have to be able to eat solid protiens without throwing up and risking band slippage. Also, sliderer foods aren't good, you just learning to eat around the band, people who learn to eat around the band don't seem to be very successful. Get in and get an unfill, before you cause damange. The "right spot" is deffinately where you want to be and the righ spot can be a matter of .1cc's. This band, it is a tempermental thing! Good Luck!

Getting an unfill is not admitting defeat. It appears you are too tight. Not being able to eat solids is usually a sign of a too-tight band.

Congrats on your loss so far! Keep up the good work. I had a slight unfill, I felt fabulous afterwards!

Thank you all so much for the advice. A big reason I was putting off going to the dr was because I did not want to tell him I needed an unfill, but I can't live like this anymore. I did not sign up to be unhealthy. Congrats to you all for taking the big step on having this surgery as well. I wish you all the best of luck! Thanks again!

An unfill is absolutely necessary - and you will feel so much better. I was where you're at for the past two months, I had a 1 cc unfill on Tuesday - SO MUCH BETTER.

Instant relief.

It sucks to crave healthy food but only able to eat things like popcorn. I was totally there.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
