Am I being taken for a ride?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am on day 9 of a tortuous12 day pre op diet (3 shakes a day and 2 cups of vegetables). Surgery is scheduled for 5/25/11 (3 days) but I have not received approval from insurance yet. I spoke with my surgical coordinator (Aja, from NYU, she's been a nightmare to deal with from the start) on Friday morning and she said even though it is still "pending", I should continue with the liquid pre op diet and not worry, approval would come through on time for surgery. Later that day I called Aetna and they said the reason it's still pending is because she didn't send any information at all in (other than the request). I left a message for Aja on Friday but of course didn't get through or hear back from her. Assuming she sends the info in on Monday what are the chances I'll be approved the next day? Should I drop this realllllly difficult pre op diet? I don't see how I'll be approved on time but Aja told me to do this diet, rearrange my life for the 25th and not to worry, that she's sure I'll be approved on time. What do you think?!!?

I am so sorry you are going through such a difficult time. I can tell you that once you get your approval it can go quickly. My insurance company told me that if I got to within a couple of days of the scheduled surgery and didn't have approval they could submit it as a rush. Maybe they will have to do that for you. Keep us updated and looking forward to being banded the same day as you.

To update you, my insurance ended up coming though in two hours! Believe it or not, I still didn't have the surgery today (it's pushed off until next Wed, June 1st) because I didn't have my medical clearance completed-which no one mentioned to me until less than 24 hours before the surgery! So. . . it's on to week #3 of the liquid diet!

I have heard wonderful things about the NYU team but have so far had nothing but grief from their surgical coordinator. Hope this is not an omen for the surgery!

Aja at NYU - Is a nightmare of the coordinator!!!

If anyone reading it - be prepared to go through hell to get all papers to insurance, clear instruction on what needs to be done, getting her to return your calls, and forget about getting anything but her voice mail.

I end up refusing to work with her, complained to the office manager ( Melissa?) who end up doing everything and was absolutely wonderful.

I guess you will have Dr Fielding for your surgeon - he is the BEST in the business!!

All this Aja trouble - will pass. Best of luck with the surgery.

I wish someone would have prepared me for dealing with Aja. She is, believe it or not, extremely courteous (if and when you ever get her on the phone) but the most incompetent, unprofessional person I have ever met. Everyone else at the office is lovely but many things they say can only go through Aja and when you call her, she doesn't pick up the phone and her mail box is always full. It took FOUR WEEKS of incessant calling to find out if she got a fax from my PCP before she finally called back and said "no, I haven't received it yet". She couldn't have called after a couple of days? That was just the tip of the iceberg. In the end, because of her, it a) took me longer to schedule my surgery and B) I am on this nightmare of a liquid diet for 3 (instead of 2) weeks.

I am excited to be operated on by Dr Fielding but if I had to do it again, or advise other people, I would say to do anything to avoid dealing with Aja.

Anyhow. . . surgery in 6 days (if I am not pushed off again). . .

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
