I gained 9 pounds!

Recommended Posts

Just before I had surgery I weighed in at 260, I had my surgery on Tuesday, on wednesday I weighed 269 before I left the hospital. Now that I have been home for 2 days I lost most of that, I'm down to 262,but I still am not down to my pre weight. I am wondering if anyone else gained a considerable amount in the hospital. I don't understand how I could gain such a considerable amount on liquids only??

That is very normal to gain weight in surgery, because they give you a lot of IV fluids. I would bet just one of those bags are 2.5 pounds. Don't worry about it to much. Try to just weight your self once a week in the morning.

Good LUCK!!

I had my surgery on Wednesday, and I also gained weight!

Just do the best you can. I find that many people expect instant results. I have been banded 4 months now, had 3 fills, and only now can I say that things are really starting to make a difference.

The first month, my band was empty. Everything was post-op diet foods, tracking any significant progress was frustrating. Go through the motions, hang in there.

My surgeon's office said not to weigh yourself until about a week after surgery, specifially because you gain weight with iv fluids and whatnot. Stay off the scale for a few days and you may be pleasantly surprised when you go back on. Good luck! I'm being banded on Monday, myself. It's going to be hard staying away from that scale. I may have my sis hide it for me, lol.

I was told pretty much the samething as everyone else. My NP said IV fluids, gas and air pumped in you from the surgery, and swelling in the stomach area all contribute to it. Good luck.

Yes, very normal to gain weight during hospital stay. Personally I weighed myself the two days after surgery and I was the exact same weight as the day of surgery. I was however up every 20 minutes the night I was in the hospital urinating.

It's perfectly normal. It'll will take 3-4 days for all of the weight from the IV's and gas to disappear. I also gained 8 or 9 lbs after surgery but 8 days later I had lost all of it plus another 13 lbs.

I would bet everything on the fact that the weight you gained was from the IV's and totally just fluid... really what else could it be... definately not hospital food...

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
