Did anyone wake up during surgery?

Recommended Posts

I woke up during a procedure, was intubated and felt like i couldnt breath. Same thing, as i put my hands up they grabbed me and told me to take deep breaths and then i was out again. I have had lots of surgeries and this was the only time it happened. It was a quick procedure so probably a light anesthetic. Told the doc when i had the band and he didnt believe me. But not an issue, i was well and truly out the whole time.

I was banded and had two revisionary surgeries for the band, and didn't wake up during any of them. Like people said, if you have a really good aneth. person, they should be monitoring it. It never hurts, though, to bring your concerns to the surgeon and nurse before surgery.

I have worked in the dental field for over 13 years and agree with this. In 99% of wisdom teeth extractions general anes. is not used. Unless you were at a hospital and had an actual anesthesiologist, you were IV sedated or "twilight sedation." Many patients ask to be "put under" or "knocked out" during wisdom teeth extractions, but are not put under the same way as they would be with abdominal surgery. The difference is, with IV sedation the Dr. can tell you to open your mouth and you will, you just won't remember anything. With general anes., if they told you to open your mouth you would not respond. (simple explaination, but you get the idea)

In my own situation, I had my wisdom teeth removed at the oral surgeon's office under IV sedation and had no problems.

I have had 4 surgeries under general anesthesia. In all 4 cases I had the feeling they gave me too much. I had the feeling like they gave me enough to knock out an elephant when it would have only taken a tiny bit and I would have been way under. All we can do is trust that the anesthesiologist does the job properly and I would bet the majority of them do to avoid loss of life and legal issues.

Well in my surgery I was put under with general anesthesia and I know this for sure. It wasn't sedation-- it was general anesthesia. I had four impacted wisdom teeth and the surgeon decided on general anesthesia and I know this for certain.

I woke up with my wisdom teeth as well. Told the anesthesiologist and didn't wake up during my lapband.

I still remember waking up during my tonsillectomy as a young child...remember very clearly my mouth being held extremely wide open with some device. It was very brief and I went back under very quickly but I have not forgotten all these years later.

I'm new to the forums. I'll be having my lap band surgery in August! However, I just had surgery to repair an umbilical hernia (2 weeks post op).

I remember being extremely scared since this was my first surgery and I heard a lot about the post op pain. I was given a valium before surgery. I was wheeled in and put on the operating table. The last thing I remember is showing the staff how much I was shaking (from nerves and the cold temperature in the or). Then i heard a voice say "Start the drugs...". Then I was out like a light.

I cant recall if it was a dream or an actual experience, but I remember looking at the staff doing my surgery (from my normal viewpoint...I wasnt floating away or anything). I remember someone looking at me and then that was it. There was no pain, no anxiety, it was just me looking at the surgeon team.

Then I woke up and immediately asked the nurse for a bedpan because I thought I had to go to the bathroom. I didnt ask the staff about me waking until I had my post op follow up with my surgeon. He said that he couldn't recall if I woke up but said that it was possible that I could have opened my eyes and had some level of consciousness during the procedure. Thankfully, the experience was not a bad one.

Since I had a great recovery period and the surgery wasnt as bad as I thought, I am looking forward to my august date.

I was put completely out too for the same reason. Worst after surgery experience ever. I don't wish impacted wisdom teeth on anyone. blink.gif

My son had general anesthesia for dental work, but it was because he was only 2 years old. They had to bring an anesthesiologist in for the procedure. General is a huge risk compared to sedation, so not done often for dental work (even impacted wisdom teeth). It's pretty rare to need it for dental work (and in my son's case was only due to his age). They also have to intuabte nasally for dental or oral procedures.

I myself had three impacted wisdom teeth removed, but it was done under IV sedation. I was asleep and did not wake up that I recall.

I've also had nose surgery (also IV sedation) and was very lightly awake for the entire procedure.

My 3 c-sections were under either epidurals (1) or spinals (2 and 3). I was "knocked out" at the end of my first, also with IV meds.

I've had general anesthesia for my back surgery, my ovarian cyst, my gallbladder, tonsills, gallbladder, and lap band and have not ever awakened that I recall. one beauty about egneral anesthesia is some of the med syou're given have an amnesic affect so if someone does wake up it's very unlikely they will remmeber it.

I was wide awake for my Dental Surgeries. I had all 4 quadrants of my mouth re contoured.

Gallbladder, Exploratory, Appendix I stayed knocked out. Amnesia effect.

LapBand, and 3rd Hernia Repair, Lymph Nodes of the Groin removed, and He kept me knocked out.

But the rest that I wrote about, I woke up during surgery, and I do remember it all.

I woke up not during but immediately AFTER wisdom teeth surgery - I was still in the theatre and in the process of being transferred to the other bed and moved out. Not too great a drama but I got a surprised 'oh, hello there". I had my wisdom teeth out in hospital under general anaesthetic, with an aneasthetist there, as did DH. It was obviously a light anaesthetic, and I think I do wake up out of them quite easily, the only operation I have no memory of at all is my recent bowel resection which was a five hour long process and they REALLY knocked me out for that one, I dont remember a thing until the next day.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
