Is an Unfilled Band the same as no band?

Recommended Posts

Title says it all. If I have a band that is completely deflated, is it the same as having no band at all when it comes to eating/swallowing pills/ etc?

My first thought is no it isn't. But I'd say you should ask a DR to know for sure.

No. You do get some restriction from the band; I have no fill and I have plenty; things get suck, I PB, etc.

Yes (in my experience at least). I have 3.8 cc, and I can eat any and everything and plenty of it.

Hi, my band is empty. I havent hit the month point yet, so no fills for me until then. But it is definetly NOT like NOT having the band. I consider myself pretty lucky, because I have been introducing foods for a few days now, and have had no stuck problems. I also have taken pills with no stuck issues, and my multi Vitamin is kinda a horse pill. I still find that I get hungry, and want to snack, but I get full really fast too. And when Im full, im FULL! You also cant eat very much before that fullness hits, even though my not very much is more than they said I would want. They said between 1/4 of a cup to 1/2 a cup, and I can eat about a whole cup, but I am satisfied for 5 or so hours afterwords, depending on what it is I eat. Like high Protein things like scrambled eggs with cheese....full for hours. Crap foods like pop tarts, hungry again in two hours. I can see why they say its a "tool" because no one is making me choose the eggs over the pop tarts, it just has to be my choice. In fact today i chose the poptarts, and I have had a miserable day, because it set me up to make poor choices all day. Tomorrow is a new day!

But, I have seen posts on here where people cant tollerate pills, or breads, or a whole list of other stuff, so I think its really up to your body. I know that doesnt help much, but you will know what is right for you!!! Good luck!~!

The band definitely has provided some restriction for me with no Fluid in it ... I know that from talking to others who have the band that everyone reacts differently though. Some people need very little if any Fluid in the band for it to be effective others need a lot of fluid. Since I have been banded I have noticed I can't eat as much and today was the first time I didn't chew enough before I swallowed and had tightness in my chest as the food worked its way through - it lasted about 15 minutes.

I know that I had by band 2 weeks ago today and I have lost 10 pounds in the last two weeks - the doctor said if the weight loss continues at that pace he won't do my first fill until it is needed.

I am so glad that you asked this question because I was wondering the same thing. This is week three for me and I am doing purees and soft foods. I have no fill in my band. I still feel full and drinking liquids is hard for me. I drink the Protein drinks and it seems to make me full fast, so I have to sip all day. So there is restriction, but I wonder how it is when I get the real thing in about a month. I would be scard to swallow big Vitamins so crush them to be sure. and still have smaller portions.

Ya I have sort of tried to test my bounderies by swallowing (not crushing) pills, not taking time between bites, etc and have yet to run into any sort of a problem.. I know im pushing my luck, but I kind of want to know how far my bounderies are lol

for me with no restriction i could eat at will....i wanted a "food vacaton" and gained about 22 pounds in a month probably due to lower metabolism and suddenly getting food in

anyway, i went to dr. vitello in chicago for lapband by ortiz in jiuqana, surgery was great, first fill 3 months later, fair but not enough reatriction, so i went home and sulked feeling like many of you seem to feel

then i hooked up with dr. vitello in chicago

he's patient, flexible...if you ask for an aggressive fill he's ok with it w/ warnings, i heeded his warnings and i'm glad---very good doc but he has stop doing bandsters

so i'm looking for a doc now to release some of my restriction cuz im at goal and cant starting the eating training

its late and that is all

good luck one and all

and goood night

There is a big difference. The first fill that you get locks the band in place. If it's empty ! You will be surprised how much food will get hung up on this band that needs to be tightened. You can't drive far on a deflated tire right? It needs to be filled.

Mine was deflated for 3 years, until about 2 months ago. (LONG STORY) You can't imagine how it feels , knowing that at every meal "almost" something would get stuck..... Now,,, as long as I chew my food, cut it small, eat small amounts also. I'm good to go. Believe me, it's like torture vs pleasure.

I know there are people out there that are saying. It works for me !

Just so you know, it can be very dangerous to be unfilled. It's better to have a small fill, and have it locked in place.

There was a Council Woman that had the band done, News reported that she choked to Death eating Fried chicken.. Well Henry Ford Hospital did the

Autopsy, and my surgeon was the surgeon that did her band. The report was false. She had not been filled yet, and she was eating pizza.

She swallowed a whole sausage slice, and it went over the wind pipe, and blocked it like a Drain Cover. She chocked to Death.

So if your waiting for your first fill. Follow your Doctors orders. If you had it deflated,,, please be careful.

Shirley.

I have never seen a piece of science that says an unfilled band is dangerous.

There are several people on here who have never had a fill and lost a bunch of weight (there was a thread not too long ago- you could try a search).

For some people, the band itself provides hunger control. For others, it takes a very small fill amount. Still others need much more. It's hard to predict where any individual will fall.

So far, I'm getting by with very little in my band, but I do have somewhere around 2cc's in a 10cc band.

I can only speak from experience, and from what "WE" as a group at Henry Ford Bariatric Clinic, Center of Excellence. This info came from The Chief Surgeon. "My Surgeon" I seen the Councilwoman on the News, this was before I was banded.

Wen we all went to our Seminar. We were given that information from the surgeon himself.

He made it very clear that a empty band can be very dangerous. Maybe that depends on the surgeon's work.

Mine was empty like I said, and I was very miserable having a meal, and knowing that it might get hung up. ((9 out of 10 times it usually did)

I can't speak about undocumented information, because,,,, it's not there. But we were educated by our surgeon, and I have to admit, since I was so uncomfortable... My guess is he must have been wright.

For the 1st month or so I felt restriction from just the empty band, because of swelling, etc... Now I am 3 months out and have 6.1 cc's in an 11 cc band and can pretty much eat like before. The band does keep my hunger at bay though, so it is definitely still helping me!

How would a fill hold a band in place unless it was so tight that it couldn't move? Sorry but that doesn't make any sense to me.

I have no fill and my surgeon thinks that is fine. She is also a Center of Excellence surgeon.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

      2. Doughgurl

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
