Protein Shake/Drink Info Please

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

I'd like to hear opinions on Protein shakes/drinks....everyone has their favorites so I'm hoping to find out what tastes good, what you've tried, what NOT to try, etc. I love milkshakes and like chocolate milk, but I want to find things I can buy that will get me through my pre-op and post-op.....

Also, if you recommend something, please list where you purchased it in case I'd like to try it too!

I'm trying to get a varied diet of protein and other "liquid" food sources so I can have it handy!!!

Thanks!

I found a butter pecan Glucerna shake at Walmart that tastes better than any of the others, you can't find it at all Walmarts but its worth the ride to go to another town if they carry it, I would call first though.

my favorite is the nectar brand Protein powders. you can get them at Vitamin world and any vitamin type shop. They have lots of unique but good flavors... like cherry explosion, cappacinno, iced tea, pink grapefruit, calypso breeze, fruit punch, chocolate truffle, and strawberry mousse.you just mix them with Water or milk. i recommend skim plus milk it is fat free like skim milk but has the flavor of 2 % milk and more Calcium then whole milk

Thanks Asherscrashers. I acutally purchased a sample pack of nectar brand powder, but I didn't get to choose which flavors....but the names sure sound good!!! Can't wait to try them! Do they fill you up?

So far I've ordered a sample pack of nectar brand powder, unjury powder, and the Ideal chocolate Milk Diet.... I also asked my mom (a nurse) to ask the dieticians at her hospital which they recommend, and see if they had any samples for me to try.

Hoping I like them all!!!!!! :)

I have been stocking up on sample packs and starter kits of various powders so that I can taste them all now and then know what to get BEFORE my liquid diet starts. On Vitalady.com you can order single serving packs of lots of different shakes. I am still waiting for my box to come from them. I tried the Jay Robb brand Egg White Protein strawberry shake today for lunch and it was pretty good. I like that it doesn't have this super long list of chemical ingredients in it and the only sweetener in it is stevia. There's no artificial coloring in it though so it wasn't pink.

I also have a starter pack from unjury but haven't tried it yet. I tried "Celebrate" but found it ridiculously sweet and not in a good way. I hear that "BSN" is good but I am waiting for mine to come in the mail still so I can't comment.

Good luck!

I have found that the unjury brand mixes smoothest. My favorite thing pre and post op has been pudding. Mix 1 1/2 scoops Unjury (I use unflavored) with 2 cups skim milk. When it is mixed well add 1 small box sugar free Jello pudding and whisk together for 2 minutes. Yum! and easy to swallow post op.

:)Thanks amyjotnj.

I have a sample of the unjury unflavored....I will try your pudding suggestion. I also purchased some store-brand "Silk" milk today since it was on sale, so I will try that with my samples of Unjury chocolate and vanilla.

Hello there. My favorite is the chocolate Body Fortress at Wal-Mart. It has 26 g of Protein in every scoop. I believe there are about 28 servings in the big container (if you use 2 scoops a day) There are very little carbs in it as well. I think it was around $20 for the container.

I have a large tub of vanilla, you can vary the flavor by adding SF Jello (2-3 tsp of powder) or SF pudding powder. Also check out this same site under "Food and Nutrition" there is a posting of over 200 different ways of sprucing up your Protein Shakes. I also love the site "the world according to eggface", she also has alot of shake recipes and ICE CREAM recipes, the ice cream is allowed on the liquid phase of the diet too!!!! It is a real savior for me. Best of luck on your journey!!

Hello,

I just love the Atkins Protein shakes. The flavor is amazing to me. They have 15 grams of Protein and about 2 carbs and low calorie. The chocolate and strawberry are pretty good.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
