Help!!!! 1.5 year after lap band

Recommended Posts

Hello. I a hoping that posting here will provide me with the answers that I am looking for. So, here we go!

I had the lap band in August of 2009. I started out at 221 lbs before surgry. I followed the diet plan and results have shown quickly. By October I was 184lbs and still trucking along. Since the surgery, I have never eaten like I had before. I was unable to eat chicken, steak, pork chops, Pasta or even cheeses, but have eaten cottage cheese (lots of protein) and yogurt (also lots of protein). Fast forward slightly, I went through a nasty divorce and seperated in January of 2010 and the stress piled on. I ate very little for many months. By May of 2010 it seemed that I stabilized around 142-145. I was able to eat, not alot, but salad, Soup, fluids etc. I remarried, happy living a great life. I lifted weights to maintain shape and toned. I exercised every day. Now I failed t mention in January, 2010 my surgeon had given me a fill to 4.2 in a 10ml band. I went off out of state for a week and had discovered that I could not eat, swollow fluids, was getting light-headed. I called him from another state and set an appoint the next day. He removed 0.5 from my band and have ben at 3.7 since January 2010. Since the new year, 2011 something has changed.

I found that I am not able to eat again! ANYTHING> I swollow coffee, and I get that mucus plug where I have to purge to feel better. The pain in unbareable. Most days I can not eat, however, there are sometime when in the evening I can sit and eat small things like, a small bowl of soup (tomatoe), or icecream. My weight is steadily decreasing, and although some would say this is good, Im worried. I am currently 135lb down from 137 in one week.

Here's the problem. I have moved out of state my job offeres no insurance. My surgeon is in another state, trying to get him to make appoint. I( I live on border of new state). I am trying to find if anyone has had this problem and how they resolved it, or have they resolved it. I always thought being stressed would have some corrolation, bnut I'm happy, so that theory goes out the window. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!

Well... I'd say you are either too tight or your band has slipped. You should be able to eat solid protiens. I think you should see a dr. weather your insurance pays for it or not. You've had great weight loss, congrats! But you should be eating healthier just for your overall health. Good Luck!

Hi Maxxim,

I've also had a similar experience with my band. I was banded in February of 2009. Things were going great and I was losing alot of weight. I was able to eat solid Proteins but not things like bread or chips. Around June of 2010, I started noticing that I would get acid reflux at night. It was miserable and very painful. I also started to get sick frequently due to eating too much and trying to eat around the band. I was still happy though because I was losing so much weight. Eventually in August of 2010, I noticed I could only eat mushies and Soups and then eventually just liquids. Again, it wasn't fun but I was losing weight so I was happy. One day in mid August, Water and hot tea would not even go down. I tried every liquid but nothing worked. I would develop a mucus plug and would have to purge to get some relief. I finally decided to go see my lap band doctor. I was self pay so I was very worried. They did a barium swallow and saw that nothing was going through. I was told that my pouch was very inflammed and the band had almost slipped. My docotor was very worried and now, so was I. He had to completely unfill the band to give the pouch time to heal. It healed rather quickly and now I feel so much better. I can't think of any incidents where I was horribly sick or vomited alot. It just seemed to get worse and worse. Anyway, I feel so much better now. I really didn't want to see the doctor since I was losing so much weight but I feel so much better now. I tried to just stay on liquids to see if that helped, but it didn't. My advice would be to see your doctor as soon as you can before you do perminent damage. I was so close to having damage since I waited. Once the pouch healed, I was able to be refilled and I am back on track. Hope this helps!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
