Am I the only one truly struggling with this?

Recommended Posts

This is my third week out and my doctor also told me I could skip the liquids/mushies if I felt up to it. I did. BUT, lately, I feel like nothing has happened as far as the band because I am so hungry all the time. I know the band is in there, but I'm still 3 weeks out until my first fill. I've even gone as far as asking the doctor if I could get filled earlier. Waiting for a call back on that one.

I am three weeks and 2 days out. I am starving. So...I joined weight watchers and it has helped a lot. I am not as hungry and believe it or not, a shake with 25 grams of Protein is only 3 points. I suggest you use your shakes to help you out with the hunger. EVERYONE, KEEP YOUR HEAD UP. KEEP SAYING TO YOURSELF, I THINK I CAN, I THINK I CAN, AND YOU WILL.

Drink a lot of fluids. Walk around the block do your best and that will be good enough. Dont give up.

Gosh my doctor told me that I would be on liquids 2 days then on to mushy and by the end of the first week he wants me on moist solids. Eat slow, chew chew chew and no liquids right before and 30 mins after a meal. The nutritionist said they were changing the way they do things because they have learned so much about the band and are relaxing the guidelines.

I think those of you that had to be on liquids 2 weeks are saints!!!! and super disciplined....:)

Terri,

Glad to hear some doctors are getting rid of the medieval post op diets. I was fortunate that my surgeon made these changes years ago so I didn't have to go through the torture. I went through each stage of the postop diet in 2-3 days on each stage so by the end of 2 weeks I was back on regular food.

Bypass has been around a lot longer, at least here in the U.S., than the band so many surgeons just took the pre and postop rules for bypass and applied them to their band patients...even though there is no medical reason necessary for such strict postop rules. Sure...if you can follow them, it will most likely result in greater weight loss that first postop month, but the minute you start eating again, it's very likely that much of that will will be regained but YMMV...but most people can't follow them and then they feel guilty and think it's one more failure.

I am 6 days post op and am finally not in any pain and therefore really hungry!!!! I am so sick of the shakes and crystal light that i am dreaming of all of the mushy foods i can eat. I saw a Sonic commercial with a hotdog and pickle on it on it almost brought tears to my eyes. THIS IS NOT NORMAL-FOOD SHOULD NOT MAKE PEOPLE CRY. I know this is going to sound gross but i heard that drinking a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar curbs appetite so how different could a half a cup of Pickle Juice really be? So I drank some and it tasted pretty good. It definitaly didnt taste as good as a Sonic hotdog with a pickle on it but helped me get over the self pitying, deprived feeling.

I'm so glad that I found this thread as I am the same way. I'm 2 weeks and 1 day out and starving. I didn't get any real instructions when I left the hospital because the surgeon has only just begun doing them there again and they had nothing. I was told to stick to liquids until I saw him again which was on Tuesday and I couldn't do it. I lost 13.5 pretty quickly and it's not been about a week and the scale hasn't moved. I am ate a chicken nugget and 1/2 6 days out and have eaten little bits of different things here and there, but it's been all Protein so I don't understand why the standstill. I'm doing Protein shakes, but they don't keep me full for long. I really don't feel like I have much restriction but there must be some because I experienced "stuck" and it was not pleasant at all. I'm going to start amping up my walking, but I guess I just thought it would be different than it truly is.

Any suggestions to get back on track?

BTW...the Dr. told me Tues. I could eat whatever I can tolerate.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
