Recommended Posts

I had my band placed in 2009. My health insurance did not cover it but I did have health coverage. After I lost my job I lost my health insurance and now NO insurance will cover me as an individual with a lap-band. Any sugguestions?

If you have records from a Dr showing no issues in over 12 months with the band, most insurance appeals are successful.

I just found this on a search and have the same problem. I got my band in 2008 (paid by BC) but since lost that insurance due to husband's job change. I've never heard the "no issues for over 12 months" and to try an appeal. Anyone tried this? My health insurance ended 8/1/2011 and I'm 47 with a family. Thankfully everyone else in the family has health insurance. Just wondering if anyone knows anything new on this topic.

Thanks for the info. I never "pushed it" with the insurance companies I spoke with. Now I will! Thanks! I'll be sure to post any new info I get.

Was there NOT a new law passed that killed the " previous conditions clause"

Yes, but what they do is charge a high premium, therefore not "excluding" you. Of course the extra cost usually excludes you!

This Really SUCKS! I do have insurance, I am a small business owner and BCBS wanted to increase my rates 40%! We than looked into BCBS Individual coverage, I was turned down! They gave me a list of reasons, mind you that since the Band No High Blood Pressure, Not on any medication weight is almost normal, but the Band was listed as one of the reasons. They can and to reject you for having the Band! It makes no sense as we are so much more healthy and the risk for future problems is small.

Options would be to look into a HIGH RISK Group insurance. If you belong to or can join any type of professional association they may have a group plan that you can join once a member. Also I read sometimes if you exclude band related things they will insure you. You could go and just get a plan for your wife and kids which should not be too bad.

In my case we were able to increase our total out of pocket max and the rate only increased about 10% which I can live with for now. Also my daughter who is 25 wants to get the band, she is still covered under my plan, but I am concerned about her getting insurance on her own should she not be working. I am sure this will have to change not sure if the Lap-band manufactures are really addressing this or not. Good Luck

Good thought, Rosstheboss. Perhaps the lap band manufacturer(s) should be asked about this. Pharm. companies have a lot of influence. I'll post again when I find out more.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
