Thought I had made the decision to get a lap band. I'd talked with my insurance company, and since I've had multiple issues related to my immune system they encouraged me to look long and hard because even laparoscopic surgeries can be traumatic ( I know... I've had 15). I'm glad I waited!

This is going to sound like a cheesy ad, but I'm just offering an alternative before proceeding with banding/bypass... to make sure you really have to do it.

Having tried Atkins, Weight Watchers, Perricone, Palm Beach, yada yada yada... I was NOT interested in having to weigh and measure everything and micro-manage my eating. After all, it was food --- not my life. A means to and end --not the end. Know what I mean? And on those programs I drove everyone in my family batty because I had to eat very specific things prepared a specific way. I was grumpy, hungry, and on every one of them I gave up without much success.

So when my friend at work asked me if I wanted to join Slimming World (what a hoky name!), I wasn't very optimistic. But after being the largest girl in the office for 4 years running, I was willing to go and listen. Before my illness (lupus), I was a size 10 -- so I knew what I was missing, being able to wear anything and do anything. Really, I went in there with a bad attitude, but I heard their 'schpiel' and thought about it.

I decided to try it, because at 5'5", I weighed 289 pounds. It wasn't going to make a difference if it bombed. Id be out the $10 for the meeting. So I took it home and digested what they had to say... literally. Their program allows UNLIMITED (as in frequency and portions) fruit, vegetables, LEAN meat and fish, rice, Beans, and more. Sure, you have to be careful how you prepare it... but you'd be AMAZED with how many different sauces you can make out of fat free plain yogurt. I've made convincing-tasting bearnaise, alfredo and hollandaise sauce -- not to mention whipped "cream" in maple, almond, vanilla and other flavors. You make sure 1/3 of your plate is "superfree" food that speeds weight loss (fruits & veggies), and the rest is up to you.

In three weeks, I've dropped 19 pounds. Lap band would be hard pressed to beat that. The thing is, I EAT ALL DAY LONG, noshing on fruit, rotisserie chicken w/o the skin, sushi... I've even cheated quite a few times -- and I'm still losing that fast!.

I know it won't work for everyone, because some people can't force themselves to give up the comfort food and aren't willing to learn how to prepare it in a more healthy way; but you're going to be forced to make those changes anyway with a band. Cheat too much and you get physically sick.

All I'm saying is that for some people (like me), there IS another much-more-satisfying solution. Food is not the enemy. it's the junk we put in it and on it!!

Whatever you decide, I wish you health. There is nothing more demoralizing than the labels people attach to us because we're large. We're told we're 'slow", stupid, lazy, clumsy... I could go on. They're all a load of horse puckey, and we know it.

Blessings,

ElizabethInDallas (down from 289 to 268)

P.S. Slimming World is only available online to everywhere in the US except the Dallas TX metroplex (thier US pilot area) where they have support groups. Based on the success here so far (one lady in my group will be the first American woman on the program to lose 100 pounds next week), they'll be expanding soon. If you're curious, check out www.slimmingworld.com.

[Elizabeth, You are full of crap and have no business posting in this forum. You know damn well that you are hawking a product for your own benefit and have no interest in helping anyone lose weight. You are absolutely ridiculous and need to be barred from posting here. I only hope anyone reading your nonsense is smart enough to see through your advertisement.

Excuse me?? If you don't want to try it, don't. Want to side my pictures?! I'm a size 24 and was just as skeptical as you are. But to flame me, use profanity and dump your anger on me tells me you have bigger problems than the one we share. I'm just giving this a shot before I get cut on again. And to the dufuses who think only weird or liquid diets can help, youre I'm for a big surprise. My good friend at church got banded and shes stuck eating and drinking tiny little bits at a time. Otherwise she barfs. I'm pretty angry that what everyone told me about good was a total LIE.

If YOU tried somethimg pretty easy ando it kept you from having to be organically altered, wouldn't YOU want to tell your compatriots? Fine.. The band works... I was just sharing my hope. Its pretty sick to flame me just because you don't agree.

Well thats what happens when you sign up on a bored for lap band. Your very first post sounds like an ad, looks like an ad. You know the old say "if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck" you know the rest.

Sorry to burst your self-righteous and jaded bubbles. I'm not a spammer, nor am I lying. They wouldn't hire someone who's only been on their program a few weeks. You are the most negative people I've ever seen. You might want to get some prozac and really once you have your surgery.. Flaming someone for sharing their new hope and (albeit very early) success.

Why would you even join a site (today) that is for people that WANT to get lap band just to tell us that you dont want to get lap band. That is so stupid. Did you think you would be accepted with open arms. Not very likely. Most everyone on here has done so much research, we could probably do the surgery ourselves. So I would suggest not posting here anymore if you do not intend on getting the lap band and leaving this site for people that looking for support.

P.S. If it quits working, I'll admit that too. Like all the PO'd people that's are sick of being duped and taken for fools, I want a REAL life where I'm not criticized for my size; but I would also like to be able to eat normal portions if possible. How can anyone flame me for sharing my enthusiasm that its working so far??? Sounfs like a combination of jealousy and resentment...both of which are YOUR problem, not mine. I was only trying to help others that might be waffling, as I was. One could just as easily criticized you all for being Laptop Band reps. Sheesh.

Elizabeth honey, stop insulting our intelligence. You just admitted that you were "hired" by someone to hawk their product. Obviously you drank the kool-Ade! Stop insulting the nice peoople on these boards and telling us how jealous we are of you, Also, stop suggesting prozac.....when you are the one who needs drugs. I would really question any company that would hire you to sell their product. It is clearly some type of shady operation that hides behing alleged 'spokespeople' like you, Why dont you stop posting here and take some of that wonderful product that allows you to eat all you want, and leave us all alone.

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
