Has anyone ever heard of a 3 week liquid diet

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever had to do a 3 week liquid diet. My Dr. told me that I was gonna have to do this before he would do my LB. I have heard of a 2 week but not a 3 week liquid diet. I just got approved in my insurance. So I dont know what to expect.

I didn't have to do 3 weeks liquid before, but i was on liquids for 6 weeks after- much longer than what most people have to do.

Something I've noticed from these boards is that every doctor has his own method he uses- from preop diet to progression of foods post-op to how he fills the band.. I wouldn't worry too much if your doctor is telling you something different. I'm sure his decisions are based on what he has found to be effective, both clinically and through his own research.

I look at it like my doctor and I are a team. He wants me to lose weight, and knows what he's doing. It'll suck for a while, but it's all part of the fun (Haha!).

You'll do great :)

Every doctor has different requirements and only they know why. I only had to do Clear Liquids the day before surgery.

You might ask your doctor for his reasons. It may make it easier to comply if you know there's a good reason for it. :)

Yes, I have heard of it. Particulary if your BMI is 50 and above. My doctor has this great love for HMR brand diet. The version he likes is HMR 500, so 500 calories. In my presurgery mindfull eating class there were several people that he put on that diet for MONTHS. Yes, MONTHS. These people did loose a lot of weight. But from talking with them they did not comply every day for those months. Sometimes they took the whole weekend off. While I am very anal about following doctors orders that just seemed crazy. And we're talking 3-6 months.

That is not to say that you should not follow the doctors orders. Knowing what he/she's called for would be helpful. We can give you suggestions of very low/non cal items to add to make it more managable.

I had to do a 2 week pre-op liquid diet, but at my physician's office it all depends on your BMI. My understanding is that the liquid diet can range from 2-4 weeks base on BMI. Just think of it as extra weight loss right off the bat because I lost 16 lbs on my 2 week liquid diet - good luck!

My doctor put me on a 3-week liquid diet. She said it was because my BMI is over 50. It was tough, I had a few setbacks, but I have surgery tomorrow!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
