Not drinking enough liquids

Recommended Posts

So i am approaching the 3 week mark since my surgery. I am up to 1/2-3/4 a cup of food per meal now and i have really noticed that not drinking after meals keeps you full a lot longer. My problem is though that now i am drinking only about 32 oz of Water a day. The old rule that i remember was that you are suppose to drink 8-8oz glass of water a day. I use to exceed that before my surgery but now i have a hard time hitting the half way mark. I keep trying to tell myself that i need to drink more but i hate feeling hungry. Mind you i haven't had any fills yet and maybe once i have a fill it will change but right now i hardly drink enough fluids. Do any of you find yourselves in my postion? What do you do to take in enough fluids?

I can't drink 64oz of Water per day. I do keep water with me and sip on it all the time but I probably only manage 32 to 40 oz per day and I do fine with that.

I eat every 3 hours. I wait 30-45 mins after I eat (some wait an hour) and then I drink two 16oz cups of Water. I usually average 80oz+ a day. If you schedule out your meals, leave time between them and set a goal of how much you need to drink.

Thanks to both of you for the help. I'm not so scared now about something bad happening.

Part of your issue could be that you are still on mushies (though you may be on solids) which will especially slip through the band when you drink. I normally drink 20 oz or so like 10 minutes before meals. My doctor says an hour after eating you can start drinking.

Keep an eye on your hydration; in my experience being dehydrated makes my band much tighter! I exercise a lot, and often drink a gallon a day of liquids. Days when I exercise but don't drink much, my band tightens up and solids can be difficult for me to get down. Pre-band I didn't drink much; now when I drink, I usually drink two or three glasses in a row, and always have a drink near me. I drink at least two glasses in the AM when I get up, two to three before and after any exercise, one right before bed, and several throughout the day.

I am only 3 days post op but the nurses told me to have 40 ounces of Fluid a day. As long as I have that I will be fine. 64 oz is ideal but 40 is good. I know that everyone doctor/ nurse is different. That is just what mine is saying and I am just making it to 40 ounces at this point.

How much Water are you supposed to be able to drink in an hour

Nick, be sure to count any other sources of liquids you're consuming: coffee, any soft drinks, Soups, broths - water-based liquids come in a variety of forms. You may be taking in more than you realize.

Regular coffee and caffinated sodas do not count as fluids and for every cup/can you drink I was told you have to drink another 16 oz of Water to make up for the loss because of the caffine. (not saying this is a fact, just what I have been told)

I drink in a day

Morning

2 10oz cups of decaff coffee 20 oz

1 bottle of Water 16 oz

afternoon 2 - 5

2 - 24 oz crystal lite 48 oz

Gym 5:30

1 - 16 oz water 16 oz

After Supper

1 16 oz bottle of water 16 oz

Total 116 oz a day

I agree that not all liquids are created equal. And that was my larger point: That ANY liquid he consumes must be considered. If not on a 1 to 1 ratio, at least in total. Which would give him options for adjusting his total Fluid intake for the day, and maybe feel better about how much liquid he IS getting in. :)

That's actually not true. Though you will urinate a tiny bit more, it's not enough to warrant drinking double the amount to make up for it.

Per the mayo Clinic: Recent research shows that this is not true and that caffeine only has a diuretic effect if you consume large amounts of it — more than 500 to 600 milligrams (or 4 to 7 cups of coffee) a day.

However, adding cream and sugar to anything (including the sugar in soda) makes it not worthwhile for drinking.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
