Pre-Op Diet Serious Help Needed

Recommended Posts

Hi All..

My surgery is scheduled for March 1 and my Dr prescribed the 2 week liquid diet as 4-6 Protein Shakes a day, sugar free jello/pudding, broth, and all sugar free drinks...for the shakes portion he suggested slimfast. So here I am, I decided to start the diet this past monday instead of tuesday just to give me a head start, by Monday afternoon I felt like death. The slimfast shakes are not only disgusting but are not filling at all. I started reading the posts on here when it came to other peoples' pre-op diets and became so frustrated with mine that I called my drs office and told them I have to have some type of nourishment (i.e. food) even if its egg whites and vegetables for one of the meals. Of course, my nutritionist recommended against it but said that I was on the right track in terms of what I was planning on replacing it with IF i decided to go that route.

After reading all the posts on here, I am a little overwhelmed with some of the Protein products that have been suggested as I am completely clueless on how to go about even picking something to make my attempt to sticking to this easier....I know I know that after surgery we are all going WEEKS with this type of diet plan and if I can't get through it now how am I going to get through it afterward? well let me say this, for the surgery, I have quit smoking after being a smoker for the last 20 years without so much as going more than a few hours without a cigarette, quit drinking socially and now quit completely eating 2 weeks prior to never being able to ever eat the same again?

I am having a hard time and could really use some help/guidance here.....

thanks in advance..

Hi Yannabee,

I was on the same pre-op diet. I'm not a fan of drinking my calories. So instead of skim milk, I had 1/2 cup of low fat cottage cheese or greek yogurt. I also added egg whites during the preop diet.

If you go to GNC, the ppl there can really help find a Protein shake that is tasty. I'm using Amplify by GNC. My doc wanted me to drink under 200 cals and 20grams of Protein in each shake. A lot of ppl on here like Muscle Milk Light.

Hang in there. Each day will get better. The first few days I felt cranky and weak and then got used to the diet.

Best of luck to you....you made it this far. I agree that we all go through the cranky phase when starting the pre-op diet. A protien shake product that I use is called unjury. They have a website too. The product has been a life saver. One scoop of the product provides 20 gms of protien. They have chocolate, vanilla, strawberry sorbet, chicken Soup and they aren't that bad. They have helped me to feel full longer. I too am in the pre-op phase and am having surgery on 2/23.

Hope that helps a little. Hang in there.:)

I second (or third) the suggestion that you go with a higher Protein shake than SlimFast. GNC should have them, but even just reading the labels at your local Walmart (or wherever) should help you find something higher. I liked the carb control EAS or the cookies-and-cream Pure Protein shakes. Those are both still fairly low in protein though.

Keep in mind that the first two or three days on the liquid diet are the worst. Your stomach will "shrink" pretty quickly though and if you can tough it out for a couple of days it will get easier.

Thanks for the post and all the suggestions...I am starting my prep-op diet Tuesday 2/23/2011. I have the same concerns and the suggestions given are good to have ahead of time.

I will keep you all posted...

Best wishes on your journey!

I hear you, it is difficult if this is the first time you've done something like this. I did a medically supervised diet a few years ago that had a "detox" phase at the start that was very similar... nothing but shakes and a small dinner for the first few weeks.

I think the trick is finding a shake that both tastes good and will fill you up. If you can nail that part, the rest of it gets a little easier. Yes, you do still miss eating full meals, but its in those moments that you need to remember why you're doing this... you do need to make some sacrifices if you want this to work.

I am in the same boat. I started the liquid diet Friday...it's only Sunday and I've been hungry and emotional! Ugh. I think the liquid diet has made this whole process real and I'm having to deal with emotional issues dealing with food. It helped somewhat today to buy yogurts, puddings, and caffeine-free teas and now I think I can make it through these weeks. Hang in there! Good thing this site is here for support...just reading that others are going or have gone through this is comforting :)

I normally go to Vitamin Shoppe since I find they have better pricing. A place like GNC or Vitamin Shoppe will normally have workers who can tell you popular flavors. Also my doctor requires whey isolate powder. Not all whey Protein is created equal so you need to confirm that you are getting isolate. It is more expensive but it's easier for your body to digest. For brands I buy Dymatize Gourmet vanilla and Gold Standard Double chocolate.

I agree that if you were getting more Protein you would feel better. The protein I use is about 24 g protein, and the fat free milk adds another 10 g. That is going to be wayyy more then the slimfast. Personally if I could'nt do the doctors slimfast plan I would feel better about doing whey isolate shakes then a high prtein solid food meals. Just my opinion I am not a doctor.

I also like Premier brand Ready to Drink from Costco: 160 cal. 30 g protein.

hey everyone!

Thanks for all of your posts and encouragement..I must say i was extremely down when I posted this and have since not only found a shake that I loooooove (muscle milk is AWESOME) but have also got past the 3 day miserable feeling!!!! I am finding it a little easier since I am still incorporating one high Protein meal into this plan with plans on full liquids beginning 5 days before surgery but I am happier now that I found one shake that I really like!!!! thanks for everything!

Are you using Muscle Milk Light or Regular? Regular is very high in calories for the amount of Protein you get.

You can do this!! I'm in day 7 of pre-op with only liquid Protein Shakes, no pudding no Jello no broth.

The first few days are the hardest because of the fatigue and carb headaches but it gets easier. Muscle milk lite is a great tasting shake and the Atkins shakes aren't so bad either. These drinks definitely aren't our milk or chocolate milkshake flavors, but they could be worse! I have to say that I slept a lot in the first few days, and luckily my family and my husband was very understanding. I'm drinking: strawberry atkins, muscle milk lite, and generic brand of slimfast low carb. You can do it you can do it!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
