Itchy bumps around wound?

Recommended Posts

I was banded last Monday February 7 th. My surgeon said not to pull the steer strips off my wounds that I should let them fall off. The small wound under my chest fell off 2 days ago. The larger wound still has the steer strips over it. But this morning it started itching around the area and by this evening there are all these little red bumps too. I see my surgeon tomorrow for my follow up so of course I'll ask her. I was just wondering if anyone had a similar experience.

Thanks All!

Debbie

I developed a rash. I was told it might have been caused by the wash they use pre surgery, like Betadyne. I had a Kenalog shot and it went away with no problems.

I had a rash also, but it was after the steri strips fell off and I started using band-aids. Doesn't sound serious, but your doc will know the score tomorrow. Congrats on your surgery! Happy weight loss!

This is exactly what I got on here to see tonight! I have developed welts shaped about the same as each of the five bandages that were placed on my stomach after surgery one week ago. The welts are thick and itch like crazy. I am going to Urgent Care tomorrow because it is all I have been able to do not to scratch up my wounds.

From what I've been reading, I think I was allergic to the glue on the bandages. Does ANYONE know what I can do to get some relief?? I am so worried about putting something on the itchy welts that might cause a problem with the incisions from my surgery, which are still healing . . .

I used first aid tape and gauze pads to cover the incision sites after the rash from the band-aids. I kept moving the tape to different locations until it was healed to prevent the same rash problem. That worked!

P.S. the itch will go away once you stop re-taping the same sites. I put antibiotic cream on the welts to keep them soft and moisturized.

Thanks everyone for getting some answers quick. I feel a little better knowing that it may be nothing but a rash. I will let you know for sure after my doctors appt tomorrow.

My surgeon suggested I rub a small amount of baby oil on the itchy area. It also helps remove the excess glue from the steri strips once they fall off.

just put some Benadryl jel for itching relief on the rash, and take some Vitamin E jel capsules and swallow them great for itching relief.!!! let your incisions breathe!!

I'd ask your doctor before using anything, as I was told before I left the hospital to put nothing on the incisions whatsoever. I developed a rash between my incisions that turned out to be ringworm and required a prescription creme.

i don't think anyone told this person to put anything on there incision, people and i were referring to put the lotion/cremes on the rash only.. alot of us have gotten those rash bumps and they itchy like crazy........

I had the same problem post surgery and after every fill...until I figured out that it was the glue from the steri-trips and the band-aids or tape. Now I just avoid the tape and tell doctors I have an allergy to it.

Good suggestions above but you might want to hold off on the baby oil as most are just mineral oil and comodogenic (clogs the pores) and a cause of contact dermatitis in many people. I used to use it as a body oil until I realized that the tiny pinprick rash I got across my stomach was directly related to the baby oil...and it didn't matter what brand I used. I have an aesthetician's license and the only oil I use on my clients is fractionated coconut oil because it's extremely light, non-comodogenic, and absorbs quickly into the skin. Any oil, including the plain vegie oil you cook with is better than mineral oil.

Thank you all for the reassurance. I did visit my surgeon for my post op visit. She said my wounds were fine and that I did have an allergic reaction to the steristrips. In the future I will make sure to remember that!

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
