When to stop eating?

Recommended Posts

I am still fairly new to this process, and have been asking lots of questions that I did not think to ask before surgery during nutrition counseling. When do you stop eating? What does it feel like when you are done? I used to think I had to feel pain to know I was done (Iknow, stupid)...Do you measure everything or start off with small portions and eat until you feel...What?

I measure out my portions (3 oz Protein, 1/2 cup vegies...maybe 1 cup if I'm hungry) and when I'm finished that's how I know I'm 'full'.

Thanks, that helps! Has that changed as you have gotten fills and lost weight? (Congrats on the awesome loss by the way! I only lost 2 ponds after my first fill, hoping my second fill helps, got it yesterday.)

I measure my portions (most of the time) and I stop eating when I have that satisfied feeling.

The reason I measure, is so that if I don't get that satisfied sensation or if I am too distracted to notice it, I don't over eat. I stop when the food is gone!

I have to weigh and measure everything I eat (for lunch and dinner - 4 oz Protein, 1/2 cup veggies). Through all of this I have found that in the past, I never paid attention to that full feeling. I just ate until I absolutely couldn't eat another bite. Since surgery, I have had to learn how to listen to my body - and that's not easy. Most meals, I don't feel full but I eat until my plate is empty. I'm not "full" by my old definition but I don't feel hungry anymore. There have been some times when I did start to feel like I couldn't eat another bite before my plate was empty so I made myself stop eating. I am slowly learning that "full" has a different meaning to me now...

Another tip that has been helpful is when you go out to a restaurant, have the waiter bring a "to-go" box when your food is served. Before you start eating, determine how much your portions should be and box up the rest. If it isn't on your plate you won't eat it. I learned this from watching a co-worker...she does this every time we eat out and I later found out that she lost 75 lbs several years ago and has kept it off.

I don't measure any food ever. I just put a little on my plate, and I can usually tell when I am full because I feel if I take another bite that I will be in some pain!

I'm like the others.. at home I measure 3 oz Protein, 1/2 cup of veggies. Eat that. IF still hungry 20 minutes later I'm allowed more veggies (provided they're not drowning in butter or other high calorie sauce.. which I don't do anyhow.. I LIKE my veggies plain or with lemon juice).

Eating out.. I eat Protein the size of the palm of my hand, veggies the size of a tennis ball. I've never had to have them bring the to-go box first, I always get satisfied and don't want to eat more, for fear of getting overly full and having to PB in public. But if putting the extra aside works for you or someone else.. go for it!! What ever mechanism works for the individual (and isn't maladaptive) I'm for it.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
