Food Getting Stuck?!!!

Recommended Posts

I had surgery almost two weeks ago. I'm on regular soft foods. I think my food is getting stuck sometimes because OMG do I have this terrible pain in my chest and don't know what to do. I try to chew my food as best as I can but I sometimes forget. My whole life I have eaten fast and I don't chew very well. So now I'm trying to reteach my self new habits. Today I had such a bad episode and I didn't know if I should drink something or if I should throw up or let it be. I know that I'm not supposed to have liquids with my meal so what do you do in this situation???? It finally passed. It didn't want to come back up and it took its sweet time going down. Ugh, it hurt but that teaches me. I won't being doing that again.

Yeah the first month is all about retraining yourself. That is why you take a week for each stage (this varies by doctor). Go slow, learn the habits, because as you get tighter, it doesnt get any easier so if you get stuck now, you will get stuck worse later and that is not where you want to be.

I forgot two times so far and drank too much, but then remembered and spit it out. Its hard to eat slowly, but its what I signed up for. food, eating isn't. Fun anymore, but that's what I wanted. I sure couldn't stop on my own. My friend who is thin and my age eats slowly and not very much. She says to stay thin now she just can't eat more. So, the band has made me like her which is healthier. Band is a tool I have to work well with if I want to have a quality life which I do. Only 8 days post op and learning. Thanks.

My food got "stuck" for the first time last night. Boy did I learn my lesson. I had a low cal Soup for dinner (bad idea-doesnt fill you-hungry later!!) then I snatched a couple bites of my daughters cheeseburger-worse idea. After bite 3 I stopped, didn't feel like it was going down....then I burped about 20 times and finally threw it up!!! Note to self: Do NOT do that again!

Getting stuck SUCKS in a big way. In week three I was allowed low fat cottage and ricotta cheese plus Soups (squash, tomato) and Protein Shakes. I had to wait another week for shredded chicken etc. Perhaps you should do the cottage cheese route for another week. Could be you are still swollen internally. I know it does'nt sound like fun but would it be better than the pain of getting stuck?

I get stuck what I think is way too often .maybe 3-4 times a week. As soon as it goes down and is stuck I know it's just a matter of time and have gotten pretty good at bringing it back up. I know I eat too fast and still insist on trying bread / Pasta products despite knowing it rarely turns out good. Common sense would tell you fluids would help push it thru but it dosn't .. it just conts. to back up, eventually having no choice but to vomit. I have found occasioally sitting up real straight and slow deep breathes more like over inflating your lungs help move it along for me.

Will you always PB/vomit if you are stuck? I've had the stuck sensation that people keep talking about but have never had anything come back up or been restricted from eating/drinking. It always makes me nervous because I'm not quite sure what's going on...

Thanks for all of the comments, it really helps to get a feel for what could help. For me personally, I have not vomited yet but I also haven't had a fills yet. I have to imagine that once I get a fill it will be much more sensitive. I hope we all remember to chew more and eat slower :D .

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
