I'm a mess...help!

Recommended Posts

I was banded a week ago today. From what I had read etc people seemed to be going back to work in a few days. I went to work today. Took express bus with cushy seat. Sat at my desk took intermittent breaks to walk around. Almost fell asleep at work numerous times. Was in such discomfort all day. Came home and spent most of my evening trying to get comfy in bed to fall asleep but not being able to. I'm crying for no reason. I'm pasty white and my lips are chapped.

Does everyone feel this awful 7 days after? I'm still sore. Ran out of pain meds days ago. My whole body feels tightened up or tense. I can't get comfy or relax. I just want some sleep!

Help please

Debbie

Well love, I too was banded exactly one week ago.. I initially only took 3 days off work which meant I got banded on the 7th, and returned to work on the 10th. Thursday and Friday were terrible. I was sore, but the biggest issue was I was exhausted. I only worked 5 hours both days and could barely stay awake. I was supposed to work Saturday, but took it off. I went back today and let me say, it was much better. With that being said, I think even if I took a week off like you I would have struggled. You're not used to working after being off and able to sleep all day. Friday when I came home I felt exactly how you described. As for the medication.. I found out early on that I was allergic to the Loratab. Instead, I took children's liquid motrin and children's liquid Tylenol 3 hours apart as per the recommendation of my anesthesiologist. They worked fantastically and although I am not taking them as much now, I do when I am feeling extra sore. Maybe you could try that?

You are not alon

I was only banded on Friday morning and discharged Saturday at noon but yesterday I was still just awful. IDK how some people say they are up and atem after a couple of days!

I have been an emotional mess. I cried so hard the other night that I thought I would hyperventilate. I have felt just terrible until this morning! Don't get me wrong, I couldn't and wouldn't be able to work today but I'm starting to feel like a sore human being instead of a hot mess.

I was in horrible pain until today (from gas, horrible pain in legs??, emotionally, etc.) They scanned my legs yesterday to rule out blood clots.

I have had 4 other surgiers in my life (three of which involved the abdomin) and I would say that this is the second worse I have felt post op. The worst was my first C section.

I did not expect to feel this poorly. I now know that every single surgery is different. I look at it this way...some people go in for a routine procedure and don't wake up. So, there is a huge range between feeling GREAT afterwards and not surviving at all. We just didn't fall close to the GREAT part of the scale.

Hang in there... OH, and I would absolutely call doc just in case anything is wrong like the dry lips being a sign of dehydration.

Hugs!

I would call my doctor about the motrin. I was told (and this by not only my doctor but at the surgery seminar) that we should not take motrin/ibuprophin. They also told me no aleve. I have been banded 10 months almost...and sometimes what I wouldn't do for a motrin or two! :)

Hope you guys are starting to feel a little better. I was also told no Motrin...only tylonol. Try liquid if its too hard to awallow a pill. And call your Dr just to check in and ease your discomfort. Maybe he/she can perscribe something to help you relax...Ativan always works for me.

While I don't have children I imagine this is how a new parent feels. So unsure of all the changes and not knowing what to expect or if things that are happening are "normal" I imagine new moms call their docs all the time with what they think are silly questions/comments...that's why they get paid the big bucks!!!

I feel pretty lucky that I haven't been in much discomfort and I am a total lightweight. I'm also a week out and came back to work yesterday. So far so good. I'm a bit uncomfortable especially with the waist on my jeans and underwire of my bra. I also miss my 3p nap...;)

I was also told no motrin or aleve. They are NSAIDs and are very irritating to your stomach lining, even cause ulcers. Taking them so soon after stomach surgery could create problems. I miss my aleve terribly - I have severe arthritis and was taking it prescription strength daily but I had to stop 2 weeks before the surgery because of how much it irritates the stomach. I am in so much pain from my arthritis, but I don't dare take it until I get the ok from my surgeon - and I'm about 4 weeks post-op.

Ibuprofin can eat away at the band I was told, by my surgeon. Tylanol is suppose to be the only thing we can take.

Stress can make that tighten up even more. So,,,, try to relax if possible ! Call your Surgeon, and let him know, maybe he will give you something for pain.

GRR! I wonder why I was advised to take the motrin.. My check up is Thursday, so you better believe I will ask! That's a shame too - Advil is my best friend during my menstrual cycle.. :)

Do double check on it. Also check about liquid, it might be less irritating than a pill form (not at all sure on that one). Most surgeons say no NSAIDs. Some say it is OK for bandsters because the stomach is not cut with banding vs. bypass where there is a higher risk of irritation. My surgeon is middle of the road, I can take them periodically, but not daily.

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!
