How to drink?

Recommended Posts

Hello Gents and Ladies

I was banded on 1/18. I'm now in the blender phase. I've got a nagging question though. How do I drink? In other words, How fast can I drink or how much Fluid per swallow is normal?

Is drinking 20oz of fluid in 5 minutes too fast (or too slow?)

I'm having trouble getting my fluids in because I drink real slow and then "forget" to drink for a few hours. Seems like I have to sip more or less continuously all day long (e.g sip every 1-2 minutes) but I'm really not good at that. Pre-banding, I was the guy that forgot to drink for 8 hours, then got home and would drink 36-48 oz of fluid in a manner of about 15 minutes. Seriously, my friends were stunned with how fast i could drink.

I know that I need to slow down now, and I'm terrified to do anything that would make the nabd unhappy especially since I'm sure it's still healing, but am I being overcautious?

I haven't PB'd, thrown up, or anything yet, just burps and the occasional hiccup.

Help! :)

It doesn't really matter because Water passes through. If you are drinking food, I'd go slower, to stay satisfied longer. But SLOWWWWWW is the method here for everything you eat, so slower is probably better. Your stomach isn't that big remember, it can't fit 20oz of water.

As long as the Water isn't coming back up, then I'd say you are not drinking too fast. :D

Since we are suppose to eat & drink slow "to give the brain a chance to catch up that the stomach is full." I would slow it down sip and enjoy! Don't GULP! it might come up. Not a good idea. So take your time and enjoy!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
