Anyone have the lapband that was still smoking?

Recommended Posts

My doctor didn't tell me to stop but I know others have had to stop to have the surgery. I am trying to quit but with the pre-op diet I am finding it hard to completely stop, even though I have decreased alot.

I was wondering this myself today. I quit before surgery and have only had about 6 cigarettes in the last month, and I wanted to buy a pack today so bad! I know for bypass people it is really bad because of ulcers or something like that. I wonder if it is for us too.

I'll be rooting for you to quit. You can do it!!! You want to look young and healthy not wrinkly and old in your new slim body. C'mon...you can do it girl!

I smoked a cigarette as I was walking towards the door for surgery & I lit up the second I got in the car to go home. I have never heard of cigarettes causing ulcers or effecting the band in any way. However, when the weight came off and I started to feel better I decided that it was time for me to quit smoking. I got on Chantix and quit within 3 months. I have now been smoke free for 1.5 years and it is a very liberating feeling. My Doctor asked me if I would be able to quit smoking before surgery and I told him that I thought it was best for me to deal with one issue at a time (weight loss being the first issue.)

Good luck to you!!!

hi all!

I am scheduled for my surgery on March 1, 2011 and my doctor warned me that the day of surgery, they give me a blood test to test for nicotine, if for some reason its in my system he will NOT perform surgery. I have been a smoker for 20 years with only a few hours without a cigarette and mostly because i had no choice because i was on an airplane...I have to admit, this surgery is THAT important to me, that I started Chantix and can't begin to tell you that even though quitting smoking is the HARDEST thing i have ever had to do in my LIFE next to having this surgery, I have been smoke free for 10 days. Chantix works!!!! you don't want to go through any problems like ulcers and pneumonia from not quitting smoking. Being a smoker who didnt really WANT to quit but had no choice to because of the surgery, I recommend trying the chantix before u go under anesthesia...

My surgeon performs the same test that yannabee spoke of, and will cancel if you are not nicotine free.

He said his opinion is that smoking interferes too much with healing. My husband used Welbutrin to help him quit, it worked very well.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
